USC raced to a 17 point ad vantage but the Tigers fought back to within four at 33-29 with 2:48 left in the first half. "We could have been knocked off," head coach Frank McGuire said. "It was ripe for an upset. When you're number two good teams look to beat you." "We were real tense the first 10 minutes," Auburn head cqach Bill Lynn said. "But I am real proud of the way we fought back like we did. A lesser team would have folded. This showed that we will be all right. South Carolina has a real fine team. I can see why they are highly ranked." Carolina hit a cold spell with 7:33 remaining to be played in the first half. The Gamecocks went scoreless until a Rick Aydlett jump shot with 2:22 showing on the clock. "When it won't go in there's Peterson to openinm By DOUG WILLIAMS Sports Writer South Carolina's Biddies, behind the hot shooting of Ed Peterson, rolled to a 99-77 opening game victory over the Quantico Marines of Virginia. Peterson hit for 34 points, including 20 in the first half. The Biddies came back from an early 8-2 deficit to take an 11-10 lead before Peterson, Brian Winters, and Rick Mousa took matters into their own hands. By the end of the first half, Carolina had crept into a 45-42 lead. The second half saw the Biddies storm into a quick scoring spree. They led the Marines by as much as 16 points during that period, scoring virtually at will. By the game's completion, Carolina had outscored Quantico, 54-35, in the second half, en route to the victory. Besides Peterson's explosion, mm *USTINCTI@I wd.., [USC I orn Aubt Auburn and All-America John Mengelt came In for praise from McGuire. "They have a fine looking team. They have a great player in Mengelt and he played very well tonight." Bob Carver, who teamed with I soph Kevin Joyce to defense Mengelt, also complimented Mengelt. "He's a strong ballplayer," Carver said. "He's a good ballplayer with a real good jump shot." Roche, twice ACC Player of the Year, had his troubles, hitting only 6-18 from the floor. "I felt good," he said, "but I was just missing." "John is so unselfish," McGuire said. "When he drives he's looking for someone to pass off to. He's not a shooter like so many other stars. He looks for the open man. He is just a real team player. A real leader. He got hot toward the end." Roche had five assists on the night plus his 17 points. Owens led the scoring with 28 points with Riker next with 23. Carver, Aydlett and Joyce. each had six points. Owens led the board attack with iies l ctory were big, and I thought they might out-rebound us. "We had real good outside shooting from Peterson, Mousa and Winters. I told the boys not to go out and just shoot, but to look for the open shot. I can't tell them just not to shoot, but I wanted them to go for the good shots." Walsh continued. "We went into the game blind, with no scouting on them at all. I don't know if they scouted us or not, but they seemed to know some of our plays. "Our two non-scholarship boys, Mark Littles and Ben Reuther, did a real fine job. That was no sur prise, as they are both fine players, and we expected it from them." Walsh was obviously very satisfied with the victory. The Biddies also came in for some of varsity head coach Frank McGuire's lavish praise. "They're a line crop." he said. The statement by Gamecock coach Frank McGuire was painfully simple and undeniably true. "We could have very easily been mocked off," McGuire continued. "We were ripe for an upset. "That's the night you get beat. We wee lucky to win." USC AH-America John Roebe, who scored 17 points but "didn't shoot too well," according to McGuire, also said the shots just stopped falling. "When you're running that fast (USC jumped off to a 264 ad vantage) you don't keep making them," Roche said. "I feel we have as good shooting as anybody," 6-i Tom Owens said. "I just hope we can play looser against Notre Dame." USC got a good effort from junior Tom Riker. Riker finished the night- with 23 points and 15 rebounds. "Riker played perhaps his best game here in the Coliseum." McGuire said. "His game is aggressiveness and going to the boards and he did that well tonight. "Owens was also outstanding. We had the homecourt advantage tonight and it helped us. We won't have it Saturday night at Notre Dame and its going to be tough up there. We've got to play well to win." feads Bido r game V1 which included 16-26 from the floor. Winters scored 19 points while Mousa added 17. Mark Littles, a non-scholarship player connected on 67 per cent of his shots, for 14 points. Ben Ruether was 4-4 from the floor, contributing nine points. The Biddies shot better than 50 per cent from the floor, while. Quantico hit just above 40 per cent. In the second half, Carolina averaged 54.8 per cent, while holding the Marines to only 31.9 per cent. "1 thought the boys played real well together," remarked coach Donnie Walsh. "It didn't surprise me. We did have too many tur novers, but that is sort of expected in the first game." USC turned the ball over 20 times. " I was real happy with our rebounding game. "There was no way to stop him after he turned from a scorer to a passer. He's one of the greatest players I've ever seen one-on-one. We tried everything with him, and the zone eventually worked. "The only reason the zone worked," he continued, "was that Mengelt stopped shooting. No one on our team could stop him. Joyce and Carver did a good job on him. But he plays one on one like they play it in the pros." The Gamecock mentor was also eager to clarify what happened in the waning moments of the game, when a fight nearly erupted. "I told him, (Mengelt) 'you played a wonderful ball game, son.' Then C~oach Lynn said to me, 'Never talk ~o my players again.' "I told him I was only com limenting the boy. He's a fine 3layer. The whole thing was just a nisunderstamding. Coach Lynn is a fine man. It had nothing to do Aith basketball. I guess he thought .hat I was ribbing Mengelt. I never lo that. But when I see a fine >layer, I like to tell him so." McGuire revealed that he was lot displeased with any of his >layers or their efforts. "I'm leased with everyone. We missed lot of openings. Our press was so ousy that when the fellows got free mnder the basket, they didn't know vhat to do with the ball. "Tom Riker had a fine game. -le's very aggressive, and is a good iutside shooter. Owens (Tom ) has keen playing real well. Aydlett Rick had a shaky start, but once ic got going everything was all ight. And that Bobby Carver. He's I tough defensive player." The thing that many Carolina ans had feared, the stall, never vas a factor in the game. "We just idn't give Auburn a chance to tall. We ran and ran fast. We just ot more speed in our lineup.
