J; Bobby S Scott proi Bobby Scott, the forgotten field general of Tennessee, has sud denly projected himself into the all-star quarterback picture. He's winning some converts from among those folks who have regarded him as something other than a star in the quarterback-rich Southeastern Conference. Enclosed Is I____ - -____ Tennes By LEWIS H. ALLEN Sports Writer "Tennee has a wel-balanced, very quick and agrsive football team. They are one of the major 'Mams in the country. Everything they ,do, they do real, real well." With that forewarning by USC graduate assistant Cam Lewis and Gamecock head coach Paul Dietzel, Carolina football fans and the USC football team are in for a tough game Saturday afternoon when the Gamecocks host the eighth-ranked Vols at Carolina Stadium. Sporting a overall record of 6-1 as compared with the Gamecocks 3-4-1, the Volunteers have turned a pre-season question mark, the defense, into a formidable plus. In the words of Lewis, "Tennessee puts a lot of people on the bail carrier. They have a hustling defense." With the exce, tion of the Vol loss to Auburn in the second game of the season when the young defense surrendered 36 points, the Tennessee defensive corps limited SMU. Army, and Georgia Tech to three points, shut out Alabama, and gave up only seven points to Florida and Wake Forest. Headed by captain and defensive back Tim Priest and featuring linebacker Jackie Walker, whom Lewis called "as fine a linebacker as I've ever seen," defensive back Bobby Majors, and tackle Bill Emendorfer, the Vol defense has proven both difficult to run and pass against. "You seldom see a quarterback have as great a game as Bobby did against Florida." Florida Coach Doug Dickey, who recruited Scott when he was head coach at Tennessee, joined in the accolades. If protection to complete passes is given quarterback Tommy Suggs the USC offense might ef fectively challenge the Vol secon dary despite the ball-hawking presence of Priest and Majors, whom Dietzel labeled "out standing." First ar head coach Bill Battle, ormer assistant under Dietzel West Point said, "We expect tI same tough kind of -star class Battle has long been a Bobby Scott fan. "He's worked hard to be a good quarterback," he said. "The coaches and players have always had great confidence in Bobby. And he's getting better game by game. He just keeps on going out there and beating the best." But beyond all the statistical data, he has met the test as a big play man. Time and time again, he has kept on the option and made the two or three yards necessary on a critical possession down play. He has hit the bit pass to keep drives alive and he has led the team on the :ield in the same confident style characteristic of another outstanding Vol quar Captain Tim Priest is another Scott admirer. "I know Bobby's not listed among the great quar terbacks," he said. "But remember what Texas Coach Darrell Royal said about quar terbacks: 'They are gauged by the success of the team.' We were 9-1 last year and won the SEC championship and we're doing pretty well this season, too. --if You '1 New Plai All Aboi Soon ti Will Be N What's in it fc inually faced with violence and Con America be great wit houi dead? In aseeig Caroina's record Dietlel commented, "O%w eom has to date been a series of ups and dons. We felt we've played ss tremely well at times, especially In wins over Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. However, in other games we've made critical mistakes that have been hard to figure out." Offensively, Tennessee is led by the passing and generalship of Bobby Scott and he running of fullback Curt Watson. Tailback Don McLeary will be out with bruised ribs and sophomore Kevin Milam a slashing runner, will assume tailback duties. A tail and fast group of receivers led by Joe Thompson, Lester McClain, and Stan Trott provide balance to the workhorse ground game led by Watson, who was described by scout Cam Lewis "as fine a fullback as I've seen anywhere." According to Lewis the "running game goes as Watson goes and they like to hand to Watson going over All-American guard Chip Kell." Lewis also said that "Bobby Scott has been more effective each week." He noted that the Vol front wall has "real fine speed and quickness. The firit four are very quick, which puts pressure on the quarterback." Noting that 'they consider Priest one of the smartest players around," Dietzel said "it seems like they always have an All American defensive back." He observed that "Walker impressed us last year with his great speed and hard nosed play." Dietzel added that Bill Battle "is a very dedicated coach and hard worker and one of ability." The Volunteers have had little trouble this season except with strong Auburn. The Tigers won handily 36-23 to put a damper on ''ennessee's chances to repeat as the SEC champions. The Vols have beaten SMU 28-3, Army 48-3, a tough Georgia Tech 17-6, Alabama 24-0, Florida 38-7 and Wake Forest 41-7. The interior line is led by Kell and center Mike Bevans. Bevans is a 6-1 216 senior who made the second team all-SEC team last year. Kell was a consensus All America as well as winner of the Jacobs Blocking trophy as thw hat blocker in the SEC. Steve Robinson and Joe Balthrop line up at the tackles with Thompson the split end and Gary Theiler the tight end. Don Denbo joins Kell at the other guard spot. Walker, Majors and Priest anchor the tough defense. "Walker has all the skills of an All American," Battle said. "Even though he is only 191 he hits with the force of a 240 pounder.
