"We don't have anything to get upset about now, but we're working on it," Virginia McMillan, chairman of the University Union Arts Committee said. Arts Committee projects, ac cording to Miss McMillan, break down into two categories: those already scheduled and those tentatively scheduled. The reason for this unorthodox breakdown is the fact that the committee has gone into some new things in ad dition to the usual art shows. Scheduled events include a Faculty Art Show, a Senior Show, and as a highlight of Black Week, a Prison Art Show, featuring art work by inmates at the Central Correctional Institute. The committee hopes that the artists from the prison will be able to appear in the Russell House Lounge along with their work. COLLAGE All the art shows will be held in the Russell'House lounge. Other shows already saheduled of the winners of the National Record Album Cover Contest; in March, an International Exhibition of Collages by famous people. In April, the committee will import a sculpture exhibition from Tennessee, and in May plans are to spotlight local artists in One-man Shows. For this month's International Week, the Arts Committee plans to work with the International Committee on either an In ternational exhibition or an exhibition of student work. For Spring Week-end, the Arts Committee will co-operate with the Special Events Committee to sponsor contests which will include a Kite Design Contests with a cash prize, a Body Painting Contests and perhaps a student paint-in. At another time next 'Spring, Arts Committee will sponsor a Tie Dying Day, on which students "can come and do their thing with tie dying.!" POETRY READINGS In the realm of the tentatively scheduled events, Miss McMillan said that the Arts Committee hopes to sp ipto poetry readings which might be held i he ussell llouse Lounge. People will also play a part in the programs of the Arts Committee. Hopes are high that the Glass blower from Underground Atlanta will come to ply his trade in an. exhibition of glassblowing in the Russell House. The committee plans to schedule another artist to paint in the Russell House Lounge. The painter will be in the lounge for several days and the painting will be his impression of the students, faculty, staff, the people he meets and his impressions of USC. The Arts Committee also hopes to bring a potter to the lounge and possibly a caricaturist. SYMPOSIUM The Arts Committee works with many other university organizations, and for the Lectures Committee's Population Sym posium, the Arts Committee hopes to have a photographic exhibition on population, and a Tin-can Sculpture for students. The Arts Committee's traditional Christmas Card Con test will have a new format this year. The contest will be held, but lht: winn1ing design will no be printed until next Christmas. The workshop, which runs through Wednesday, is sponsored by the University and the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation. Executives of 10 newspapers in eight southern states will attend. The workshop will promote an exchange of ideas and experiences among the participants to help find ways to solve newspaper operational staff problems and to improve staff performance and the final product. During the workshop, the Dean of Journalism, Albert T. Scroggins, workshop chairman, will summarize the results of a newspaper personnel survey which was conducted this fall among 1000 southern newspaper executives. The survey Is indicative of current attitudes and practices in hiring and holding newspaper personnel is futu various university organizations including the Art Department, the Arts Committee also co-operates with Columbia Museum of Art. The Arts Committee has worked with the Night Club Committee by providing light shows in the Golden Spur. "If other campus groups want to use the light shows we have when they present bands, we will be glad to help," Miss McMillan said. Special exhibits on tap include a "Saturday Nigh-t the Movies" exhibit which will feature old movie posters, covering the lounge. Some will be for sale. Milton, professor of management in the USC College of Business Ad ministratfon, will discuss "Motivation and Leadership Among Newspaper Personnel," and Byron B. Harless, a consulting industrial psychologist and vice president for personnel, Knight Newspapers, Inc., will discuss "What Can Be Learned About Newspaper Personnel from Testing and Evaluation Procedures." Also on Tuesday a student panel will elaborate on "I Want to Work for a Newspaper, But...." Charles H. The Committee itself is com posed of interested students with only a few-art students, and there are still a few positions open.
