One "without any apparent weakness." USC head coach Paul Dietzel and graduate assistant Cam Lewis took turns praising the Vols yesterday at USC's weekly news conference. "They have great team hustle and team spirit," Lewis said. "On defense there is always three or four tacklers around the bail carrier. "They are," Lewis continued, "a well-balanced, very quick .and aggressive football team." The Vols have been more prone to a passing attack the past few games, mostly because Curt Watson, All-SEC as a sophomore, has been slowed by an injury. "Watson is a tremendous foot ball player," Lewis said, "Scott Harris UsO How many defensive halfbacks have three scoring returns this season of more than 90 yards each? There's at least one. He's Carolina junior Dick Harris who's returned a punt 97 yards, a kickoff 96 yards and an interception an official 94 yards although movies of the game show him catching the ball on the four yard line and speeding 96 yards to score. "Walker (Jackie) is Dick Harris ?s speed for 21-3 lead on-an 80 yard touchdown pass play from 'quarterback Tommy Suggs to flanker Jim Mitchell and Harris' two lightning bolt returns. Georgia's depth paid off in the fourth period, however, and engulfed the Gamecocks whose last lead was 34-32 with 11%, minutes remaining in the game. Harris had a 97 yard pint return earlier in the season against North Carolina and has three non-scoring kickoff returns of more than 50 yards each, plus several other punt and kickoff returns in the 30 yard plus category. He's as fast as any man they have on their football team. Their strong safety Tin Priest is considered one of their smartest players. "They will play the same defense that we play," Dietzel said. "Of course," he joked, "they use different personnel." Dietzel revealed that co-captain Dave DeCamilla is ready and "will start and will play." The rest of the lineup is unchanged except at right defensive halfback where Jimmy Nash will take over for Don Bailey. Dietzel also revealed that standout linebacker Al Usher, the Gamecocks leading tackler, un derwent surgery on his knee Monday and is lost for the remainder of the year, although Usher "vows he will be back for Clemson." Billy Ray Rice is still on the injured list but Joe Regalis is set for action. Rice is expected to play before the end of the year. TD runs average yardage per kickoff return with 29.5. Jake Green of Colorado State was first, averaging 30.7, and Dick Graham of Oklahoma State was second at 29.7. Harris returned five kickoffs 183 yards against Georgia to raise his average per return to 31.7, and may be ranked first when this week's NCAA statistics are distributed, depending upon what the two ahead of him did. For the season, Harris has in tercepted four passes, returning a total of 95 yards for one touchdown. Two of his interceptions, including one against Georgia, were in the end zone and prevented opponent touchdowns. He has returned 24 punts 280 yards for an average of 11.7 and one touchdown. He has returned 19 kickoffs 603 yards for a 31.7 average and one touchdown. He's also made 36 tackles, assisted on 10 others and recovered one fumble. That adds up to 978 yards in returns for the -5-11, 164 pound junior from Point Pleasant Beach, N.J . who in track last spring was the Atlantic Coast Conference 440 yard champion with a time of 47.5 second, anchored the conference winning 440 yard relay team, and ran the first leg on the conference championship mile relay team. RIOUS rral Brown & Black Ma rksl 1321 MAIN Tim Vols' Tim leads seco The main concern in the Ten nessee football camp back in early September was the alarming lack of experience in the defensive secondary. Only Tim Priest was battle-tested and the Vols looked vulnerable, on paper at least, alongside the. great quarterbacks they were to face in 1970. With more than half the season gone, the secondary unit has more than held its own, performing brilliantly at times, and Coach Bill Battle is quick ot point out that Priest has been the guiding hand in the quick development of the defensive backfield. "Tim is our captain and his attitude has had a big effect on the wvhole team," Battle said. "He's smart, he's a leader, he's a dedicated football player and he's a competitor. "Tim Priest isn't the kind to give his all only in a game or even during the week before a game. He works hard the whole year. "lie was injured in the spring and the early part of the fall and it's just been in the last two or three games that he's really been at full speed, although you wouldn't know it by the way he's graded out in the films of every game." "it seemed like every other player on the field had been a quarterback in high school and I knew I didn't have the arm to compete with guys like Bobby Scott." Priest recalled. "So they made me a defensive back and I've been there ever' since." At the beginning of his sophomore season, 1968, Priest stepped into a cornerback berth vacated by All-America Albert Dorsey and was the only soph to crack the starting liriup. The following year he was shifted to the other side, there to replace Vol great Jimmy Weatherford, and his statistics included a team-leading seven interceptions. Assistant Coach Buddy Bennett, in charge of the defensive secondary, thinks Priest has made ? great strides in recent games as the strong safety. "Tim has been looking really good lately," he said. "He started off slow, probably because of his ankle troubles, but right now he looks like one of the best defensive backs in the league." Priest speared three interceptions against Alabama, earning a share of the UT record for most in terceptions in a game. 4 CC he end of the season.
