A number of those g0ing to the Fort are active in GI movements, others have ex pressed to me strong anti-war sentiments. We go with open minds, however, something Mr. Davenport obviously could not do. Hopefully. we will gain a better understanding of what Fort Jackson's program involves. If we get the VIP treatment and ugly things are glossed over, we will be dissappointed. but not duped. I don't see why Mr. Davenport would begrudge us the opportunity of going and making up our own minds. Also, this tour is only the first step in Student Government's effort to promote better relations with the Fort and with GI's. Today a Fort Jackson contingent is in the Commons Room--officers and GI's--to talk with students. In addition. present plans call for a "Soldier Appreciation Week" at USC. If our visit to the Fort does "give work to GI's" and to Mr. Davenport. we regret it, but we have every intention of inviting him and other Fort Jackson per sonnel to campus as our guests. We are sure much good will come from these attempts. The charge that a trainee's. toekes were wired to show realism at a mock-up POW camp is as irresponsible as saying enlisted men's teeth are pulled while of Acer's teeth are drilled. The list goes on and on. Granted, the army may be a bummer, but Davenport insults our intelligence with his writing. It would appear to the casual ob server that he has been asked to "grow up" and the prospect is displeasing to him. I realized this to be true this morning when I read in The State that a Carolina coed had been raped in her dor mitory room! I just cannot believe that this University has sat back and let this happen. The article stated that a window screen had been removed by the rapist, and consequently, he en tered the building, held a coed at knife-point and raped her. Where wei the campus police the whole time that he was loitering around the building and removing the screen? Could it be possible that they just didn't happen to notice this man in his "activities"?--or were they too busy issuing a parking ticket to someone parked overtime for fifteen minutes? This is not the first rape this semester. In fact, it's far from the first, or the second, or the third...! But what protective measures has the University provided? Virtually none-until after one of these in cidents occurred. I don't know how the ad ministration and trustees of this University can have the nerve to brag about the time being spent on the planning of new buildings and pro ,;en very time is n to de0fse MSrocure some protective measures for coeds before another incident occurs. At the beginning of the faH semester '70, President Jones guaranteed the safety of all campus residents both to the students and to their parents. We demand this guarantee be put into action. It is bad enough that we can no longer stroll across campus at night with dates, but to be attacked in our own rooms must not be tolerated. The Administration does not even provide adequate busing services to libraries, labs, and classes for Capstone residents at night. It seems ironic that the state was more than willing to send National Guard troops to quell disturbances in May, but not in providing adequate and increased police protection now when girls are being physically attacked and mentally wrecked. As citizens of the Carolina Community and of the United States, we demand the right to be safe.
