"It should be a heck of a ball game," Coach Paul Dietzel said, 'a real wide open affair. Coach Peterson has an aggressive, hustling ball club. Since they found a quarterback they look like thcy always have." The quarterback Dietzel was referring to was sophomore Gary Huff. Huff had not played a play until the Florida game two weeks ago. The 6-1, 185 19 year-old came off the bench in that game with his club behind 38-7 and promptly went to work. In the seven minutes remaining in the game Huff hit 8-15 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. "Well, I guess they won't be redshirting me," was all Huff had to say. Cam Lewis, graduate assistant in charge of the frosh offense, scouted the Seminoles. "State had early trouble finding a quar terback," Lewis said. "And if Bill Peterson doesn't have a good quarterback he doesn't have a good team. "They were alternating bet ween a junior and a senior and then they put Huff in," Lewis continued. The Gamecocks have made a few changes in their lineup for the non-conference clash. "We feel that we have to play the boys that are playing the best," Dietzel said. Tommy Suggs Biddies use schedule lull to recuperate Hurt unexpectly all night by a stong N. C. State freshman running attack, Carolina's football Biddies did produce their best offensive effort of the year in the 35-19 loss to the Wolflets, running up 270 yards total offense and all 19 of their points in the second half. The Biddies hope to utilize a lull in their schedule to continue that offensive improvement and also to allow several injured players to return to health and fulltime playing duty again. The next outing for the freshmen will be against Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Oct. 31. The brightened Biddie offensive outlook was counter-balanced by their defensive units inability to cope with an N. C. State running attack that ran up 228 yards on the ground and punched in three scores from short range. Hard running Willie Burden was the chief culprit with 183 yards on 33 carries and the Biddies, who had previously held two opponents to an average of less than 100 yards rushing, were also touched for their first aerial score of the season on a 26 yard halfback pass. Trailing'14-0 at halftime, reserve quarterback Robbie Davis led a Biddie rally that featured starting Biddie quarterback Marty Woolbright seeing action at flanker. Davis hit 13 of 24 passes for 192 yards in the second stanza, including a 70 yard bomb to wide receiver Eddie Muldrow to close the gap to 14-13 before the con sistant Wolflet runners ground their way to victory. For the game, Davis was 16 of 35 attempts for 236 yards and two scores and he also scampered four yards on a bootleg play for the other Biddie touchdown. The USC running attack, which was held to minus 11 yards in the opening half by a unyeilding N. C. State line, revived for 78 yards in the last two quarters, led by fullback Richard Waggoner's 52 yards in 8 attempts. With the schedule breather before meeting Georgia Tech, the Biddies hope to obtain the services of halfback Thad Rowe, their leading rusher in the season's opener and out since then with a leg bruise. The return to full strength from nagging leg injuries by several players would also enhance prospects for the depth shy USC first-year-men. Tommy Suggs, with five regular season games remaining, has become the first Gamecock to top the 4,000 yard mark. In between Reeves, who ran and passed for 3,376 yards during the 1962 through '64 seasons, came Nlike Fair who compliled 3,012 yavAs, 1965-67. Prior to Reeves, USC's total offense champion was halfback Steve Wadiak, 1948-51, and all but 21 of his 2,899 yards were gained on the ground. In last Saturday's 21-15 upset loss to Maryland, Suggs completed 20 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns. He was thrown for losses totaling 28 yards by the fierce Maryland rush but his 266 yards total offense for the game raised his career total to 4,065 yards. He has passed for 3,896 yards and run for 165. A couple more games as productive, yardage-wise, as last weekend and it's possible Suggs could wind up his career with 5,000 yards. In leading the Gamecocks to a 3 2-1 record so far, Suggs has completed 73 of 151 passes for 1,010 yards and five touchdowns. Using more of a drop back style than the play-action, scrambling style of 'the past two seasons, his rushing total has been nullified and he has Collarec USC's Joe Wingard (85) and on Maryland fullback Scott Saturday at College Park. Teddy Heffne D)espite his team's loss to Maryland last week USC head coach Paul Dietzel does not feel the Gamecocks are out of the ACC race. "Everyone is just getting in down into the nitty-gritty," Dietzel said. "There are too many people that are even. Anytime you're in your conference and take someone lightly you're.going to get beat." Duke is presently sitting atop the ACC standings. The Blue Devils have a 3-0 conference mark and a 4-2 overall record. Leo Hart, at one time the nation's top passerthas decided to bypass the laurels and let his running game take care of things. North Carolina and Wake F"orest are tied for second with 2-1 records. USC is third with a 2-1-1 record followed by Clemson at I-i 0. Maryland 1-2-0, N.C. State 9-2-1, and Virginia 9-3. In addition to toping 4,000 total yards, Suggs has become the first Gamecock quarterback to pass for more than 1,000 yards three years in a row. John Gramling passed for 1,045 yards once, 1953, and Fair had 1,049 yards through the air in 1965, ut Suggs is the only Gameck to pass for more tha% 1,000 more than once. Reeves never reached the 1,000 passing plateau, throwing for 930 yards in 1962 and 974 in 1964. By throwing for two~touchdowns against Maryland, Suggs raised his career TD pass total to 25, five of them this season. He has scored four times himself, giving him a touchdown responsibility total of 29, and a new school record. The old record was 28, sot by Reeves. By erasing that sole remaining Reeves record, Suggs now holds every South Carolina career, one season and single game passing and total offense record and has nearly half a season to improve on his marks. By attempting 40 passes at Maryland, he broke his own school record of 37 attempted against Florida State in 1968. And speaking of Florida State, the little senior quarterback from Lamar, will be leading the Gamecocks against the Seminoles Saturday night in Carolina's Homecoming game at 'arolina Stadium. The schedule is formidable and a slip up somewhere should be expected. North Carolina has Wake Forest to tangle with this week and Virginia. Clemson and Duke to get by. The Gamecocks have Duke at home and Clemson on the road. Wake Forest has become a different team of late and is fast becoming a honest to goodness threat .
