Or at least, it is dying (drowning?) here at Carolina. In a few years there will be no more old Carolina swim ming. The old pool will be gone, the coach for the past two seasons is gone and the old Carolina swim ming look is going fast. The resigning of Pete Combes as head swimming coach along with the hiring of Alan Gentry as the new coach may be one of the many stepping stones to developing an ACC contender. Becoming a contender in every sport is ideally an Athletic Director's dream. And Paul Dietzel is no different than any other in this respect. Dietzel is now focusing on swimming. Along with tran sforming the squad into a real contender, he has planned both a new outdoor pool and natatorium. Larry Erbaugh came in relief of Alan Hilliard to put out the North Carolina threat. Hilliard was credited with the win. Butch Anderson was the USC hitting star in that game, getting three singles and a run batted in for four attempts at the plate. The outdoor pool will be completely financed by the school, but the natatorium will be built on a 50-50 basis with the federal government. Uncle Sam will be providing $200,000. Dietzel said he believes that to have a top notch sports team one must have top notch facilities. During Combes' reign as coach the squad was not top notch in the sense it did not take first in the conference, but it did attain the highest placing that any Carolina swim team has reached. In the 1967-68 season the squad went to the ACC Championships and finished third. In 1968-69 they also finished third, but this year the team dropped to fourth while Maryland won a tightly contested G olers to swing for title The golf team will go to Pinehurst, N.C. Friday to begin play in the ACC Golf Tournament. The Gamecocks completed their season with a 16-6 record after beating Wofford, East Tennessee State. and Georgia Tech at Tryon, N.C. Friday. Many believed that the reason f.or the lower finish had been the slack recruiting. This deficiency PITINGTON has seemingly been mended with John Pittington taking over as head recruiter. To date he has signed four good prospects and hopes to ink several more highly sought after prep stars. With Gentry taking over as head coach, he may decide to put Pit tington at a different position where he might be more helpful. This seems very unlikely though because Pittington has done a good jiob as assistant coach and head recruiter. One outstanding spot on the team is the diving squad which is coached by Vic Laughlin. Rated by coaches in the ACC as not only the best in the conference but probably also one of the best in the South. With no graduating seniors, the. squad definitely has the potential to continue to dominate the ACC in the diving department. Although this -season the squad backslided, next year. with Pit tington's recruiting and Gentry known talent for building winners and set ting records, the swimmers could st ar t the climb back up to the top.
