It was the third meet this year
for the Gamecocks which has gone
down to the wire, and the first in
which they have come out on top.
Georgia has had a tough time with
South Carolina schools as they
recently lost to Clemson by an
identical 73-72 score.
All three graduating seniors on
Carolina's team gave good per
formances in their last meet.
Besides Callander's high jump and
Sim's two mile were a 4:18.0
second in the mile for Sims and a
second in both the 100 and 220 for
Dave Hines with times of 10.0 and
22.4. Hines also anchored the
Gamecock's winning 440 relay
team which beat a fine Georgia
team with a time of 42.0.
High point man for the
Gamecocks was freshman hurdler
Billy Novo who ran his best time of
the year in winning the 130-yard
high hurdles in 14.3 as well as
taking a second in the intermediate
hurdles. The two places gave the
New Jersey native a total of 8
points for the day. He was followed
by Hines who totaled up 7/4.
Dickie Harris came through with
a win over Georgia's Jimmy
Tuggle in the 440 in a time of 48.6,
which was also the best of the year
for the Gamecock sophomore who
was taking time out from his
football duties. He also took a third
in the broad jump and ran on the
440 relay team.
Junior vaulter Jim Scott mat
ched his year's best effort with a
14-6 win in the pole vault. Brian
Hyder got a third for Carolina with
a vault of 13-6.
Ron Rader matched his best
effort of 22-/4 in winning the broad
jump as well as taking a third in
the triple jump. Bob Kaczka fought
off the Bulldog's Eddie Baxter to
take the 880 with a time of 1:55.6.

Saturday the baseball team

The Tar Heels gave away the
first game, giving up four

five errors. The Gamecocks scored

Third in a series on minor sports.
Swimming is dead. Or at least, it
is dying (drowning?) here at
Carolina. In a few years there will
be no more old Carolina swim
ming. The old pool will be gone, the
coach for the past two seasons is
gone and the old Carolina swim
ming look is going fast.
The resigning of Pete Combes as
head swimming coach along with
the hiring of Alan Gentry as the
new coach may be one of the many
stepping stones to developing an
ACC contender. Becoming a
contender in every sport is ideally
an Athletic Director's dream. And
Paul Dietzel is no different than
any other in this respect.
Dietzel is now focusing on
swimming. Along with tran
sforming the squad into a real
contender, he has planned both a
new outdoor pool and natatorium.
The outdoor pool will cost $100,000
and the indoor pool will be in the

In the bottom of the seventh the
Tar Heels scored all five of their
runs, four of them unearned. Larry
Erbaugh came in relief of Alan
Hilliard to put out the North
Carolina threat. Hilliard was
credited with the win.
Butch Anderson was the USC
hitting star in that game, getting
three singles and a run batted in
for four attempts at the plate.

outdoor pool will be completely
financed by the school, but the
natatorium will be built on a 50-50
basis with the federal government.
Uncle Sam will be providing
$200,000.
Dietzel said he believes that to
have a top notch sports team one
must have top notch facilities.
During Combes' reign as coach
the squad was not top notch in the
sense it did not take first in the
conference, but it did attain the
highest placing that any Carolina
swim team has reached. In the
1967-68 season the squad went to
the ACC Championships and
finished third. In 1968-69 they also
finished third, but this year the
team dropped to fourth while

Many believed that the reason
f.or the lower finish had been the
slack recruiting. This deficiency
PITINGTON
has seemingly been mended with
John Pittington taking over as
head recruiter. To date he has
signed four good prospects and
hopes to ink several more highly
sought after prep stars.
With Gentry taking over as head
coach, he may decide to put Pit
tington at a different position
where he might be more helpful.
This seems very unlikely though
because Pittington has done a good
jiob as assistant coach and head
recruiter.
One outstanding spot on the team
is the diving squad which is
coached by Vic Laughlin. Rated by
coaches in the ACC as not only the
best in the conference but probably
also one of the best in the South.
With no graduating seniors, the.
squad definitely has the potential
to continue to dominate the ACC in
the diving department.
Although this -season the squad
backslided, next year. with Pit
tington's recruiting and Gentry
known talent for building winners
and set ting records, the swimmers
could st ar t the climb back up to the
top.
