Qualifying for events begins Friday afternoon and runs through midday Saturday. The finals in the running events are Saturday afternoon and night. Maryland, one of the national powers in track and field, will no doubt dominate the meet again. lobby Howe Play Wolf lets Coach Biedenbach H EAD A.W. This year the Terrapins are headed by conference record holders John Baker - 4:07.3 in the mile, Rus Taintor - 9:00.8 in the Algie Sims tomorrow !ddies s The Biddies will attempt to avenge an earlier defeat at the hands of the N. C. State Wolfiets tomorrow night at 6 in the preliminary to the State-USC .battle. The Biddies took a 94-77 beating from the Wolflets Feb. 18 in Raleigh. The 17-point loss was the worst defeat for a Biddle team since the 1966-67 season, when Bobby Cremins was a freshman. Four of the State freshmen average 6-6 in height, but they have no player more than 6-7. Their tallest man is 6-7 Bob Heuts, who scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the game in Raleigh. The Wolfiets' most highly-touted player is Rick Holdt, a 6-6 product of Paramus, N. J. Coach West hopes the Gamecocks will use the experience they gained on the track in an earlier meet with N. C. which ended in a 50-50 tie to better last year's fourth place finish. "After Maryland, we hope to be in the thick of the fight for the next couple of places with Duke and North Carolina," said Coach West. "I hope our top boys will be able to rise to their potential and place as well as they can to help us leapfrog a few places," he added. The events in which the Gamecocks are highest are the 60 yard dash with Jimmy Small, the 60-yard hurdles with Billy Novo, the 1,000-yard run with versatile middle distance runner and record holder (in the 1,000) Bob Kaczka, the 600-yard run with Bob Howe, the one mile run with Algie Sims, the broad jump with Dickie Harris, the pole vault with Jim Scott, the broad jump with Mike Haggard and Tony Callander, and the one mile relay. Benson tossed in 26 points, five above his seasonal average. Most of Ben son's points came on long jump shots. The other two State starters are Mike Gillespie and Dick Curran. Four Wolfiets starters scored in double figures in the Raleigh game. The other starter, Curran, had nine points and reserve Jerry Beyer had 10 to join the double figure club. The Wolflets style of play is similar to the style employed by the varsity. They use balanced scoring, aggressive board play and rebounding to much the same degree as the varsity. The number two Biddie scorer is 7-0 Danny Traylor. Traylor, who averages 18.3 points per game, had 18 against the Woiflets, but fouled out in the second half. The other three starters are Casey Manning, with a 17.3 scoring average, Jimmy Powell, with a 14.7 average and Jackie Brown with a 7.4 average. The Gamecocks will rely primarily on the talents of All America candidate John Roche. Roche, the conference's third leading scorer with a 23.5 average, scored 38 points against State to tie his career high for a single game. The Gamecock's second leading scorer is Tom Owens, who is averaging 16.2 points a game and leading the conference in rebounding with a 13.7 average. Tom Riker at center, Bobby Cremins at guard and John Ribock at forward round out the Gamecock starting lineup. Riker has a 13-point scoring average and a 9.0 rebounding average. Cremins is averaging 7.4 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. Ribock has a 5.0 scoring average and a 6.3 rebounding average. The Gamecock bench strength is composed of Bob Carver and Rich Aydlett. Aydlett has a 6.0 scoring average, with most of those points coming on outside shots against zone defense. State used a man-to-man defense against the Gamecocks in Raleigh, attempting to stop the Gamecocks' scoring under the boards. The Wolfpack held Owens to six points, but Riker foiled their plans with 17 points. Most of Owens' efforts in Raleigh were exerted toward setting picks for Roche. The 'Pack defenders refused to switch off and double team Roche, and as a result Roche was forced to take the outside shot instead of feeding the ball inside to Owens. Heartley and Leftwich drew the assignment of stopping Roche one on-one and both failed. Williford said after the game that he should have come out away from the boards to help Heartley and Left wich double-team Roche. The Gamecocks employed a zone defense in Raleigh and Coder was the only State player who had any success working inside against the Gamecock front line. The Wolf pack was successful in out rebounding the Gamecocks, 34-32. A State win tonight would insure them of a second-place tie with North Carolina. State can clinch the runner-up spot with a win and a Duke victory over the'Tar Heels.
