Tourney-I finish 7th By JOHN GASH Sports Writer Trhe USC swimmers wind up the season when they leave Wed nesday for the University of North Carolina to compete in the ACC Championships. Based on the same principal that the basketball championships are, the meet will decide the ACC swimming crownholder. The battle is expected to be divided among USC, North Carolina State, University of North Carolina and Maryland. The favorite is Maryland. Also attending will be Clemson, Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest. Coach Pete Combes feels the ACC Championships will be "one hell of a meet." He added, "It should be the best championship in the history of the ACC's." Looking forward to the ACC's, the swimmers finished seventh in last Wednesday through Satur day's Southern Intercollegiate invitational Championships (SIC). Even with several outstanding team and individual per formances, USC was unable to do battle with the top-rated teams that attended. Other teams that were scheduled to appear never turned up because of the tough competition. The tough competition came in the form of Southern Illinois, the eventual winner, which has eight All-Americas. University of Florida, who finished second, had five All-Americas competiting. Only three of the 24 events weren't won with NCAA Cham pionship qualifying times. USC's Jim Weliettel set a new Carolina school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.8. He bettered his old school record by a second and a half.
