Trhe USC swimmers wind up the
season when they leave Wed
nesday for the University of North
Carolina to compete in the ACC
Championships.
Based on the same principal that
the basketball championships are,
the meet will decide the ACC
swimming crownholder.
The battle is expected to be
divided among USC, North
Carolina State, University of North
Carolina and Maryland. The
favorite is Maryland.
Also attending will be Clemson,
Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest.
Coach Pete Combes feels the
ACC Championships will be "one
hell of a meet."
He added, "It should be the best
championship in the history of the
ACC's."
Looking forward to the ACC's,
the swimmers finished seventh in
last Wednesday through Satur
day's Southern Intercollegiate
invitational Championships (SIC).
Even with several outstanding
team and individual per
formances, USC was unable to do
battle with the top-rated teams
that attended.
Other teams that were scheduled
to appear never turned up because
of the tough competition.
The tough competition came in
the form of Southern Illinois, the
eventual winner, which has eight
All-Americas. University of
Florida, who finished second, had
five All-Americas competiting.
Only three of the 24 events
weren't won with NCAA Cham
pionship qualifying times.
USC's Jim Weliettel set a new
Carolina school record in the 100
breaststroke with a time of 1:00.8.

by a second and a half.
