He noted two reasons for this 41 change. The first is the enormous population increase, and that it can cause either apathy, as in India, or claustrophobia, as in the United States. The second reason is the ever present technical possibility that we may destroy ourselves. He observed that while his fA generation was mainly concerned with hunger, the new generation is obsessed with the aims and pur poses of the world. The revitalization of intellectual functions is one of the hopes Fisher has for the MLS. Projecting MLA's activities into the next ten years, he believes that MLA will survive and that its values will change to the point that it will become more critical of its scholarship and its relevance to Tianksgiving society. Present Fisher sees the MLA as turning from a market place of men to the Members of the Ridgeville Teen market place of ideas as it seeks to Club working with the Metroplitan satisfy the growing needs of Education Foundation distributed education and universities Thanksgiving baskets to needy throughout the country. families last Thursday. W. Faust, professor of Engineering at the University to Vienna, Belgium, East Berlin, West Berlin, Moscow, Leningrad, Minsk, Marseille and Paris. And for Faust--author, scientist and father of eight--the fact-finding trip Oct. 2 - Nov. I that took him to all those places was his third such trip, except this one was his first behind the iron curtain. Faust joined the faculty this fall after serving as professor of solid state science at Pennsylvania State University. His Moscow lecture turned out to be an experience in itself, since Dr. Faust who speaks fluent German found himself speaking through an interpreter. "That's the first time I ever had to use an interpreter." he ex plained. "But very few scientists in Russia speak either German or English." Faust recalled several in teresting differences between American and European culture. For example, "Women in science in Russia usually have no more than one child. The state believes these women are more valuable in science than in raising children." he explained. In addition. Faust observed many of the streets in East Berlin and the Russian cities were not only in bad repair but also ex tremely bare of vehicles. "It's strange to see the large number of cars which are broken down and just parked along the streets. The belief that these countries have little trouble with crimes such as stealing is evidently a fallacy according to what Faust observed. "I kept noticing people keeping their windshield wipers locked in their cars. Then when it started raining. they would take them out of the glove compartment and put them on the windshield." he recalled. Although modern equipment does exist in such countries as Russia. Faust found that "a fair amount of work is done with old methods. I saw one foundation of what appeared to be a large building being dug with picks and shovels. Women were doing the digging," he added. In other buildings completed withina the past five years.
