Speaking on "The Modern
Language Association in the World
Today," Professor John Hurt
Fisher said that a slow evolution -
not revolution - is taking place
within the association.
Fisher. an executive of MLA and
a professor at New York
University, said the evolution is
due to "social relevance"and ef

Fisher said that knowledge is
devt.loping into a "market" and
more people than ever are in
volved in education.
Groups such as MLA are useful
to society by providing teaching
professionals with a forum in
which to exchange ideas and
improve educational methods.
Speaking of the young, Fisher

"protest"--from "griping" to
"confrontation."
He noted two reasons for this 41
change. The first is the enormous
population increase, and that it can
cause either apathy, as in India, or
claustrophobia, as in the United
States.
The second reason is the ever
present technical possibility that
we may destroy ourselves.
He observed that while his fA
generation was mainly concerned
with hunger, the new generation is
obsessed with the aims and pur
poses of the world.
The revitalization of intellectual
functions is one of the hopes Fisher
has for the MLS.
Projecting MLA's activities into
the next ten years, he believes that
MLA will survive and that its
values will change to the point that
it will become more critical of its
scholarship and its relevance to Tianksgiving
society. Present
Fisher sees the MLA as turning

East Berlin, West Berlin, Moscow,
Leningrad, Minsk, Marseille and
Paris.
And for Faust--author, scientist
and father of eight--the fact-finding

all those places was his third such
trip, except this one was his first
behind the iron curtain.
Faust joined the faculty this fall
after serving as professor of solid

His Moscow lecture turned out to
be an experience in itself, since Dr.
Faust who speaks fluent German
found himself speaking through an
interpreter.
"That's the first time I ever had
to use an interpreter." he ex
plained. "But very few scientists in
Russia speak either German or
English."
Faust recalled several in
teresting differences between
American and European culture.
For example, "Women in
science in Russia usually have no
more than one child. The state
believes these women are more
valuable in science than in raising
children." he explained.
In addition. Faust observed
many of the streets in East Berlin
and the Russian cities were not
only in bad repair but also ex
tremely bare of vehicles.
"It's strange to see the large
number of cars which are broken
down and just parked along the
streets. Evidently it is too difficult

countries and so the cars or trucks
are just parked alongside the
streets and left there." he said.
The belief that these countries
have little trouble with crimes
such as stealing is evidently a
fallacy according to what Faust
observed.
"I kept noticing people keeping
their windshield wipers locked in
their cars. Then when it started
raining. they would take them out
of the glove compartment and put
them on the windshield." he
recalled.
Although modern equipment
does exist in such countries as
Russia. Faust found that "a fair
amount of work is done with old
methods. I saw one foundation of
what appeared to be a large
building being dug with picks and
shovels. Women were doing the
digging," he added.
In other buildings completed

Faust observed old-style elevators
