Fourteen sports. including the newest additions of bowling rugby and soccer fall under the wing of the department. Wehb and his staff are respon sible for scheduling recreation hours for the gym and pool facilities. The women's intramural program has fallen into the hands of the department this year. The Intramural Department checks out equipment to any af filiated group on campus and organizes such activities as the up Coning golf tournament and sports banquets. The planned athletic complex will alleviate some of the problems. Webb feels. but outdoor athletics will still be hampered. ilntramurals are operating on two athletic fields, which will soon be done away with because of the construction of the walkway from Bates liouse and the high-rise parking lot. Webb hopes that the construction of more athletic facilities will be planned in the future. With added facilities the participalion of students will be greatly increased. he said. At the present time each dorm is allowed to field only one team in (ach of the major sports. Webb points out that a dorm such as Nfaxcy, which houses over 350 students. cannot fully benefit from such a system. "When 15 or 20 students com prise a flag football team. what can the other 300-plus students do for recr-eation." he asks'? Not so, according to Coach Paul Dietzel, who says "Virginia Tech should be one of our roughest games of the year." Coach Bill Rowe, a member of Dietzel's staff, believes "next to Georgia, VPI will be our roughest game yet." " post such as "Big Four Day" in North Carolina. Number one is the scores of each loss indicates it is a club to respect. Against Alabama, for instance, Tech fell 17-13 and had a late rally severed due to a fumble deep in 'Bama territory. Also, the Wake Forest game was a close fought 16-10 affair as was the Richmond loss, 17-10. Last week against Kentucky a missed field goal with 11 seconds left in the contest prevented a probable victory instead of a 7-6 loss. Pre-season polls ranked Virginia Tech in the top twenty-- but that was before Ken Edwards was injured. Edwards, surely, must be considered the second important factor for Tech's flop this year.
