T 'wo banquets are scheduled for
this year, which shows that in
tramurals are growing both in
interest and in participation.
The planned athletic complex
will alleviate some of the
problems. Webb feels. but outdoor
athletics will still be hampered.
ilntramurals are operating on two
athletic fields, which will soon be
done away with because of the
construction of the walkway from
Bates liouse and the high-rise
parking lot.
Webb hopes that the construction
of more athletic facilities will be
planned in the future. With added
facilities the participalion of
students will be greatly increased.
he said.
At the present time each dorm is
allowed to field only one team in

points out that a dorm such as
Nfaxcy, which houses over 350
students. cannot fully benefit from
such a system.

can the other 300-plus students do

It would seem that when
Carolina faces a team that has lost
its last four games in a row,
Saturday might prove to be a day
off on the field for the Gamecocks.
Not so, according to Coach Paul
Dietzel, who says "Virginia Tech
should be one of our roughest
games of the year."
Coach Bill Rowe, a member of
Dietzel's staff, believes "next to
Georgia, VPI will be our roughest
game yet."
" post
such as "Big Four Day" in North
Carolina. The North Carolina
schools get together and compete
in sports not participated in by
varsity teams. Webb says that
such a program is possible in
South Carolina.
Webb has been married a month.
His wife, Frances, was the first
secretary of the Intramural
Department.
Filling the position of Director of
Intramurals will be Whitson.

Though Tech has dropped its
first four games of the season, two
important factors must be con
sidered. Number one is the scores
of each loss indicates it is a club to
respect.
Against Alabama, for instance,
Tech fell 17-13 and had a late rally
severed due to a fumble deep in
'Bama territory.
Also, the Wake Forest game was
a close fought 16-10 affair as was
the Richmond loss, 17-10. Last
week against Kentucky a missed
field goal with 11 seconds left in the
contest prevented a probable
victory instead of a 7-6 loss.
Pre-season polls ranked Virginia
Tech in the top twenty-- but that
was before Ken Edwards was
injured.
Edwards, surely, must be
considered the second important
factor for Tech's flop this year.
Last year against the Gamecocks
Edwards combined with Terry
Smoot to gain 346 yards and helped
maul the Gamecocks in the Cock
pit.

Edwards, though, has seen only
limited action this year but is
speculated to be ready for the
Gamecocks.
Also, though VPl is winless to
date, it must be remembered that
it stood 1-3 at this time last year
but then reeled off six straight
triumphs and won a bid to the
Liberty Bowl.

"is that it has the soundest kicking
game of anyone we faced so far."
Earlier this year the Gamecocks
faced Georgia's Spike Jones who
drove Carolina into several holes.
However, John Simesak, the
Gobblers' hooter, is reputed to be
even a greater threat.
"Not only did he average 49.1
yards against Kentucky punting
Rowe said, "hut he has alreatl
kicked a 55-yard field goal this
year. If VPI gets over the 50 yard
line, it has a chance for three
points.
Dietzel said that VI has added a
passing game that produced 250
yards for Gobblers last week
against Kentucky.
"Thev vary their style and
formations and even run from the
shot gun sometimes," he con
cluded.
"There are no sorry teams
