"Hey Invades Cock Pack boo By BRUCE HONICK Sports Editor "To lose to NC State at this time wouldn't knock us out of the (ACC) race, but it sure would hurt us a good bit." This is how Coach Paul Dietzel regards his Gamecocks' Saturday match in the Cockpit. The Wolfpack, picked in pre season polls to carry home the crown, dropped their first game of the season to Wake Forest, 22-21. The Demon Deacons were "knocked out of the stadium for 57 minutes," said Dietzel, but those last three minutes were all Wake Forest needed. Coach Earl Edwards and his boys lost a good deal of pride in that first game and were hungry for a win, taking out their frustrations on a stubborn Tar Heel squad the very next week. The 10-3 win over North Carolina %%s hard-earned, however, State found Bill Dooley's team to be as stubborn as the Deacs and could not clinch a win until the fourth quarter of play. Three interceptions and fum bleitis was the key for State's 24-7 win over Maryland the next Saturday. Although the score in dicates a somewhat easy win, the Terps tied the Pack in the first down column with 10. State amassed 185 yards on the ground, not too many more than Maryland's 163. The Terps' aerial attack out-shown the Wolfpack with 87 yards to State's 76, but passing is not State's forte. Miami took a 23-13 win over the Pack last week in Hurricane country and State is desperate for a win. Carolina being their next opponent, Gamecock fans can only hope. Defensively, the Pack uses a nine-man front. Ron Carpenter, 6'5 255-pound left tackle, was an All ACC selection last year and is State's strongest All America candidate. Jack Whitley at right safety leads 'pack interceptors with two and is a formidable kickoff returner, averaging 19.9 yards a return in nine carries for 189 yards. On offense State -relies heavily upon their ground game. Wingback Leon Mason leads the ACC in average yards per Death Valley matches frosh, Cubs South Carolina's freshman team, sporting a tough defense, a powerful running attack, and an 11 game undefeated streak, takes on Clemson's Cubs at Tiger Stadium Friday. Game time is 1:30 P.M., a change from the previously an nounced 2 P.M. starting time Both squads are coming off wins in their opening games, the Biddies defeating The Citadel frosh 13-7, and the Cubs rallying from a halftime deficit to upset the Georgia freshmen 27-21. The Cubs demonstrated a balanced and versatile attack in their first game as they came from the short end of a 14-3 halftime score to win against the strong Georgia first-year men. They hacked out 162 yards rushing and passed for 126 more to exactly match the Bulldog freshmen's total offense output. Halfback Chuck Huntley sparked the Tiger frosh ground game with 103 yards rushing, while quarterback Billy Addison teamed up with flanker Bob Schell for touchdown tosses of 56 and 19 yards. The 6'0 185-pounder is second in the league in yards rushing with 329. Charles Bowers at halfback is another threat. The 6'2 205-pound scatback has carried the ball 69 times for 224 yards and a 3.5 average per carry. The Pack starts Darrell Moody at quarterback, but his services have not been called for en tensively in the past four outings. "They've had such success running," said Coach Pride Rateree,"that they haven't thrown a lot." He's deadly on the run, however, with 150 yards in 59 carries and is the leading scorer on the team with 24 points--all by running. Carolina scored first when captain Wynn pop kicked the ball to left wing Jac Classen, who took it over for the try. The conversion was un successful, but the Gamecocks had three points'to their credit. Handling field goal chores for State will be Mike Charron, who scores consistantly from 30 yards out. He is the second leading scorer on the team with 15 points, making three of four PATS and four of eight field goal attempts. Gary Yount is the Pack punter and doubles at safety. He "kicks it high," said Rateree, adding that State also has good coverage on punts. With a 43.1 average per punt in 28 attempts, Yount will give the Gamecocks Dick Harris quite a bit of work to do..
