USC. byfu b y fu Last Sunday afternoon there were rumblings of discontent at the Roost as Carolina's football squad watched their own somewhat inept performance against North Carolina on Coach Dietzel's televesion show. These rumblings became even louder as they watched the television show of another well known football coach. After showing Georgia's smashing victory over Clemson, ,V ince Dooley sounded an ominous 'Warning to the Gamecocks: "We look forward to getting a team between the hedges" (the hedges which surround the playing field of Georgia's spacious Sanford Stadium). The rumblings at the Roost reached a rating of around 4.0 on the Richter scales at breakfast yesterday when the Associated Press's predicted score read Georgia 30; South Carolina 14. As loud as those rumblings at the Roost may be, predictions of a Georgia victory are fully justified. Vince Dooley has yet to field a weak team since becoming head coach at Georgia. In 1968 the Bulldogs were sup posed to be a bit weaker since they were using a large number of -younger players than usual and they were also taking on a tough NOW THER -INTER] House ol TO BI * 14 DIFFERENT INTE e 1-7 EXOTIC EGG * 24 PROVOCATIVI * 7 WONDERFUL * 14 TASTY SANDWIK 4467 Devine St.-Ph. 797-851 (At Ft. Against these five toughies, however the 'Dogs showed great strength in tying the Volunteers and Cougars, running up two touchdown victories over Ole Miss and Auburn (both bowl winners) and destroying Florida pre-season SEC favorites, 51-0 at Jacksonville. In their first two games of '69 Georgia has scored 65 points and yielded zero. Also on paper the Bulldogs are deeper than the Gamecocks. They have more superior athletes than do the 'Cocks. Not only does Georgia get the top athletes in its own state, but they are also able to enroll many athletes from South Carolina, which Carolina and Clemson cannot touch because of the ACC's minimum score of 800 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Frank Howard and Paul Dietzel would have given their eye teeth for such athletes as Kent Lawrence (Central), Bill Darby (Walhalla), Steve Farnsworth (Greenville), Mike Lopatka (Beaufort), John Jennings (Columbia), Wayne Byrd (Florence) and especially such super stars as Steve Greer (Greer) and Dennis Hughes (Seneca). Only a few of these players went to Georgia strictly by choice. The challenge of playing Georgia is imposing yet the discontented Gamecocks rumble with high hopes. Their high hopes can be realized if they meet a number of conditions. They can win if ....they don't beat themselves with their own mistakes. Against Duke they fumbled on their own 33 yard line and were guilty of four big in fractions (15 yard penalties). They can win if...they take ad vantage of a relative soft spot in the Bulldog's defense. The 1969 Sugar Bowl game was primarily a defensive battle between Georgia and Arkansas, but Razarback quarterback Bill Montgomery hit flanker Chuck Dieus on 12 passes for 169 yards, and one was a 27 yard TD pass, the game's only touchdown in Arkansas' 16-2 win. Last week, Clemson's soph QB Tom Kendric, hit on 20 of 40 passes against Georgia, completing 8 to Charlie Waters for 101 yards. The Tigers' passing game was also their downfall, however, as they were intercepted 3 times. These 2 pass-catch combinations cannot be more talented than Suggs and Zeigler. Lastly, the Cocks can win...., if the defense can come through at key times as they did against Duke and UNC.
