Some new E Freshmen here are in for a more "relevant" bout with first-year themes. In trying to motivate the fledglings toward more imaginative and ambitious writing, the English Department will try a "unique" personal ap proach. Reading works from such modern authors as Truman Capote, Norman Mailer and James Baldwin, almost 3,000 freshmen will be exposed to the basics of descriptive, expository, and argumentative writing-via books and essays related to con temporary American life. "Freshmen English is the biggest course on campus--almost 3,000 students are enrolled in it-the only one that all USC students are required to take," said department head Dr. John Guilds. "It has to be as relevant and interesting as we can make it." NOT GRADED Since the principal aim of these .ntroductdry courses is to "get opeople interested in writing motivate them to write better and express themselves in a more mature way," students are not graded on first drafts of themes. North Organ recital Sunday The new pipe organ in Rutledge chapel here will be heard during its first recital Sunday at 4 p.m. Sam Batt Owens, renowned concert organist, will perform. Fancher, former head of Carolina's Air Force ROTC detachment, now mans the helm of USC-based S.C. Law Enforcement Officer's School. Housed in the College of General Studies, the program (offering academic credit) now has 28 enrollees. The program, which until August of this year was non credit, was authorized in 1952 by the state's legislature. The accredited program was realized this summer as a result of the efforts of Carl Resonover, Carolina graduate and head of the governor's Law Enforcement Assistance Program, and Bill Leeke, head of the State Depart ment of Corrections. Through the mode series, the student is in troduced to a study of tragedy, comedy and romance and their relationship to the model literature. Dr. Ashley Brown and Dr. John Kimmey, both of the USC English Department, are co-editors of the five volumes "Modes of Literature" series. Dr. Kimmey explained that the mode is a "mood or attitude which an author assumes toward his subject and the form or manner in which the subject reveals itself," and added that "the mode ap proach is unique in the country." Selections in any mode are studied on a chronological basis so that the student can see, for example, what tragedy has meant through the ages. Among the various advantages to such a system is that the vast amount of material available limits the instructor to teaching only three modes each semester. - Bob Beason Tuba anyone?
