Several colleges and universities will be asked to participate. The group, headed by Dr. John McConaughy of the political science department, will also sponsor lectures and debates throughout the coming year. Representatives of the club will attend the Mid-South Model United Nations conclave to be held at George Washington University in the spring. At the event last year Carolina IRC participants received an honorable mention for best delegation. Volunteer Services, says. director Bob Alexander, seeks to involve this student in local affairs. - Volunteer Services (VS), while trying to coordinate various community help programs, does not intend to establish a "super organization," he said. Nor, he continued, does it perform only "do-good" services. Rines gets government directorship Brian Rines, a Ph.D. candidate in clinical psychology, has been appointed director of Camp Daniels, a government-financed program to aid emotionally disturbed children. The federal government granted $40,000 to the South Carolina Department of Mental Health to finance the program. The camp, located near Orangeburg, serviced 32 children recently for a 7-week period. The program was a definite success, a spokesman said, and plans are underway to repeat the service during summer 1970. The federal government granted an additional $10,000 for the coming year, and enrollment is expected to increase by 50 per cent during the next session. Students want to see their work in terms of human enrichment," said Alexander of service-minded youth. In the area of "meaningful ac tivity," he noted that the group has several projects underway in this community. One such project is a tutorial program involving the teaching of area students by USC students. "We will work mainly with elementary and high school students here," he stated. Also planned is a program for the elderly. "It's awful," Alexander noted, "to say to a person, 'You're old. Go live in a high-rise'." "We want to get the old people involved in work with the young." Alexander also disclosed plans Formei d.0 dies in Dr. Wilfrid Hardy Callcott, a former dean of the University and specialist in the diplomatic history of the United States,died Saturday in Houston, Tex. Dr. Callcott's 43 years of service included being associate professor of history, professor, dean of the graduate school, dean of the faculty, dean of the university 1959 61 and professor emeritus since 1968. Prior to joining the faculty in 1927, Dr. Callcott was an instructor at Columbia University. He was a former president of the Conference of Deans of Southern Graduate Schools, a member of the South western Scholarship Society and Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Callcott was author of book reviews, published lectures and of the volumes, "Church and State in Mexico," "Liberalism in Mexico," a biography of Santa Anna, and "Caribbean Policy of the United States." He has been a visiting professor at Duke University, lecturer at John Hopkins, George Washington and Miami universities, and in 1963-64 he was a Fulbright pro(essor at Oxford University, during which time he also lectured its here for students to work in the hospitals, perhaps as "candy stripers." Another project is a program whereby a Juvenile delinquent will after having committed a crime, have a companion-student to go through the legal consequences of his act with him - "sort of a 'Big Brother' program." Other plans include "imaginal recreation." " 'Imaginal' is a play on word s," he explained. "We want the youngster to build up his image and at the same time blow his imagination," he commented. Volunteer Services has received requests for help from such groups as the Legal Aid Society, Pineland Hospital and local orphanages.
