Six Col Are Sb By DICK MCMILLAN Staff Writer Six Columbia neighborhoods are slated for heavy treatment by "the organization" this summer. The organization? The Metropolitan Education Foundation (MEF). And the treatment? Fun and something beneficial for all involved. MEF offers a great opportunity for students who wish to get in volved in local affairs for the betterment of the community. SUMMER PLANS According to Harold Kirtz, a When Tc Your Y The schedule for the rel4 yearbook is as follows: May 11th (Sunday), 7-1 Office, Russell House May 12th, 1-7 p.m., Russ4 May 13th, 1-7 p.m., Russ May 14th, 1-7 p.m., Russ4 For those who failed to extra yearbooks will be on s "It Is a unique yearbook, "even the cover is unique." As a result of this survey, day camps will be offered in several neighborhoods for children aged six to 12. In addition to teaching arts and crafts, the camps will serve as nurseries. This will en able mothers to take summer jobs. This summer their efforts will be coucentrated on the lower economic areas with most other neighborhoods being targets in the future. Also offered will be instructional courses for parents in banking, fi nance, and insurance. CONTROL MEF is entirely under local con at the movies 'Cho There is a wonderful m o v I e down at the Fox which has me practically at a loss for terms to describe how effective it is in addi tion to its excellent, excellent act. ing, photography, direction, story, music and other outstanding traits that speak for themselves. Let me say, firstly, t h a t you must see "Charly," starring Cliff Robertson, and I'll build f r o m there. "Charly" is one of those splen did films that hardly gets the pub licity it deserves, the publicity that goes to sell trash. It is one of the best movies of the year, although the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences excluded it from its list in favor of some other films that "Charly" surpasses. As I have implied, it is a film that is greater than the sum of its parts. There is something unique interwoven i n t o the masterfully maintained mood of this movie, but for which you have to view it yourself to find. This film reviewer cannot quite put his finger on what it is that each individual viewer will find, react to and be entertained by, but he knows that the film's merit is equivalent to its effect upon the viewer. The actors thrill you; the photog raphy r e a 1 y communicates; the story makes you cry; the music BF L 5046 US( orhoods Work trol and financed by Columbia businessmen and donations. It is a good opportunity for stu dents interested in the improve. ment of the community to step forward. Inquiry concerning work with MEF this summer may be made at the Wesley Center on Pickens Street. Lrly' vith Dale Ramsey threads it like a living pulse and the direction makes it happen. And again, it's so entertaining. Somehow though, the Academy did not manage to exclude Cliff Robertson from the list of best actors, thankfully, and he received the Oscar for his memorable per. formance as Charly Gordon, a mental retardate with a sad, numb. ing story (which I cannot reveal here, of course. I will, however, stress the importance of the dia logue; there is a lot to be gained from it, and consequently, a lot to be missed). The utter totality f Robertson's portrayal is awe. some for any actor. It is a very satisfying experience watching the tompleteness of a characterization Df Charly as he undergoes changes is the plot progresses. So perhaps these are facts that make "Charly" such a rewarding xperience for the moviegoer; linding so m u c h in one of the imaller pictures of the year which ias no big stars, no big publicity :ampaign, no bigness, period. It s discovering movies like "Char ly" that really keeps the cinema >f which we are fondest alive. Galloway Elected Chip Galloway has been elected senator of District 21. His name was omitted in The Gamecock in a story on candidates winning in spring elections. IEF.
