The double win kept North Car. olina firmly atop ACC standings with a 9.3 record, and buried the Gamecocks further in the cellar with an 0-9-1 record. North Caro. lina is 16-8 overall. South Carolina is 9.13-1. USC's Jimbo Smith opposed UNC's John Yancey in the opener. The first batter of the afternoon, Clem Medley, opened with a walk. After Buddy Caldwell threw him out stealing, Chris Ruddell tripled. Skip Hull brought him home with a single. In the third Ruddell and Hull singled after one out. With two runners on, Smith forced the next two bat ters to ground out. In the fourth USC captured their only lead of the afternoon. Don Stanley opened with a triple and Wallie Jones doubled down the right-field line. Then Butch Ander son hit his first homerun of the year, a towering opposite-field shot. With one out in the fifth UNC's Ruddell walked. After Ruddell stole second, Hull sacrificed him to third and Eddie Hill then brought him home with a single. The sixth and seventh in nings were scoreless and the game went into extra innings to break the 3-3 tie. North Car olina wasted little time in re gaining the lead. Eddie Hill opened with a single and was sacrificed to second and then to third. Jimbo Smith's fa tigue became evident as Char lie Thomas and Ron Lemmons dou bled. Larry Erbaugh came on and al lowed an RBI single before retiring the side. After two men were out in the Gamecock half of the eighth, pinch-hitter Ronnie Fulmer walked. Stanley then singled him to third. Wallie Jones then beat out an in field hit, scoring Fulmer, but Butch Anderson popped up to end the game. The Tar Heels continued their assault on Gamecock pitching in the second. Following a double play, Hull doubled through the fence. Hill then collected an RBI single before Houston struck out 1,annum. After Wallie Jones flied rut, Butch Anderson singled, but Buddy Caldwell hit into a double play. The Tar Heels coasted in from there on Rhodes' three-hit pitching. Sports Editor UNC, who shares the 1968 ACC tennis titled %ith Carolina, ripped their way to an 8.1 victory over the Gamecocks Saturday. Carolina s Bobby Heald, AC singles champion, dropped his first match of the conference when Lee Langstroth toppled the All-Amer :ca player, 6-4, 6-4. Heald led in, the first set 3-1 when the UNCI ace won four straight games to: bring the tally to 5-3. Heald held his service in the ninth game, but Langstroth finished up the set by winning the tenth game. Langstroth's shots were consist ent throughout the match. He kept Heald running with his consistent and well-placed shots. In the second set Langstroth came from behind, winning a three-game spurt to win the match. USC's Jay Schlosser lost a long three-set match to Tar Heel Joe Dorn. Schlosser lost the first set of the match 10-8 but heldl his service in the second set and won it, 6-4, but the Carolina senior was overpowered in the third set w'hen Dorn whipped past him, 6-1. Things weren't much brighter for USC's Doc Malloy, when Fred Rawlings took the fourth singles match, 8.6, '7-5. Carolina's Lewis Weisser helped the Gamecock netters sav-e face when he defeated Jim Conn, 6-4, 6-3, in the number three singles position. The Gamecocks got nine hits off starter Mike Caldwell, but were inable to put them together to mount a substantial offense. State got their final run off Erbaugh in the seventh. Cammack walked and took third as center fielder Ronnie Fulmer dropped a fly to the outfield. Cammack then scored on a balk. Joe Laing pitched the ninth for the Gamecocks and retired the s.de without a hit. Ronnie Churchwell led the Gamecocks at the plate with three hits. Anderson and Wallie Jones had two each. Dan Traylor Signs USC Grant D)anny Traylor, a 7-0, 245-pound enter from Winston-Salem's R. J. Reynolds High, has signed a has ketball grant-in-aid with Carolina.
