Army Heald Walsh Unable To Play By JIM HANEY Sports Editor Army used a tenacious defense and some hot outside shooting in the first half to knock the Game. cocks out of the NIT, 59-45, in a quarterfinal game Tuesday night. The Gamecocks had to play with. out guard Billy Walsh, who was injured Monday night. Walsh suf fered a cut that required n i n e stitches to sew up when he was cut by glass from a broken revolving door. Army jumped off to an early lead, 16-8, with 8 minutes gone in the first half and never trailed after that point. The Gamecocks came out of their zone defense into a man-to-man late in the opening half, but were unable to keep the Cadets from amassing a 31-23 half. time lead. When Tom Owens picked up his fourth foul with 15 minutes left in the game Army with a 40-28 lead and the cause was all but lost. Army then stretched their lead to 18 points, 54-36. John Roche led the Gamecocks' scoring with 16, followed by Tom Owens with seven and Bob Crem ins with six. The smaller Army five did an excellent job of blocking USC off the boards and were able to keep Owens and Ribock from being ef fective inside. The loss gave the Gamecocks a 21-7 record for the season. e Pak to hors ree wit purcase nteMuiia *Parkn tw r s re (wit Knocks 'Coi Leads USC 14* NIT Tipoff Ribock jumps for USC in the NIT opener against Southern Illinois.
