"Poetry has to be concerned with anything and everything, but not official response. I want a real response not a journalistic one," he said. Dickey, formerly consulting poet at the L i b r a r y of Congress, is teaching two graduate level En glish courses at Carolina this se mester in poetry and writing. His aim is to develop "individual sen sibility." Dickey, who at times reads his poetry in public and has made re cordings of his work, said last y e a r he was runnerup for the Grammie Award in spoken arts records, but lost to Sen. Everett Dirksen. His readings have been praised as clear and well-spoken, and as adding to the poem an in sight into the poet's views. He explains his style of writing as a long hunt for the proper form. "It's like when you play an instru ment, you hear a furtive sound in something you write," said Dickey, who often equates writing to his guitar playing. "If I have any- virtues it's end less experimentation."
