Rolling To Favi By JOHN DAVID SPADE Sports Editor Earlier in the season, Coach Paul Dietzel said that the Game cocks were getting better. Over the last two weeks they have been good enough to whip two powerhouses who were sup posed to roll over USC. Saturday Carolina's d e f e n s e matured and made the difference against Wake Forest. In the first quarter Dave Lucas and Lynn Hodge were becoming fixtures in the Deacon backfield. Soph Al Usher, who graded a fantastic 92 per cent in the game films, was stopping Wake from running inside. When Freddie Summers did find time to throw the ball, USC's Pat Watson turned out to be his favorite receiver. Gamec< ired D( secondary that the vaunted quar. terback seldom found anyone open to throw to. Watson's four interceptions for the day set a new ACC mark for steals in one game. Carolina's defense dropped the opposing quarterback seven times for losses. In the course of the game, Wake turned the ball over to Carolina 13 times without having made a first down. Where the defense left off, the Tom Suggs-directed offense took over. Having thrown for five TD's the previous week, Suggs looked as if he might crack that mark as he hit senior split end John Gregory with three scoring tosses and flipped another to Doug Hamrick, all in the first half. The score (oes not indicate how soundly the Gamecocks thrashed Wake, as Carolina moved up and down the field almost at will. In the second half the Game cocks stopped themselves on some costly penalties, without which the score might have been more one-sided. The Gamecocks ran 86 offen sive plays, 22 more than their op ponents. Rudy Holloman led the Game cocks in rushing with 91 yards. Fullback Warren Muir gained 64 on the ground, and snared two passes good for another 36 yards. Muir looked like his old self as he took over at fullback fulltime as Benny Galloway left the field with a sprained ankle. But it was Suggs' three TD's to Gregory and a nifty 21-yard jaunt that set up Carolina's final score that kept USC fans thrilled. Known as a scrambler, Suggs had moments when he could stand still in the backfield and look around for receivers. The offen sive line, anchored by senior Bob Mauro has been giving the soph sensation from Lamar better pro tection each week. It takes a solid defense and an offense that can move the ball and score to win in the ACC, and the Gamecocks put them both to gether Saturday. Record vation, they were still confronted with many great disadvantages. The Biddies were undefeated, loaded with talent, and extremely well-coached. The Hunks' primary function was to run plays for the varsity, hence they did not have enough time to install a set offense. They also had to borrow some varsity reserves just to fill out their d roster. h With the help of the varsity, however, their desire seemed to he all the Hunks needed. Through- r out the week, the varsity staged f Hunk rallies to try to intimidate the "cocky frosh." The Hunks were somewhat a short of running backs, so they called upon one of their defensive tackles to play fullback. Byron Sistare was the fullback on Brook- t land-Cayce's great state chain J)ioinship team of '66 and in Thurs (lay's game he returned to his ol4 h form.
