Referee G Except Cha By SUSAN TANNER Staff Writer Every now and then an individ. ual goes unnotice(, doing an out. standing job in a particular ath. letic program. Such has been Dick S'ein, Head Intramural Referee. 'T'om Webb, director of the in. tramural program, had this to say about him: "l)ick Stein's participation in intranurals has been extensive and varied, involving long hours 'Cocks Tour Wake Forest Other cities seem to be catching on to Columbia's program to meet visiting teams. As the Gamecocks landed at Wake Forest, they were met by n veibiers of the local chamber of commerce and given forms tc complete in order to receive a frec welcome gift. From the airport the team went on a guided tour of the R. J. teynolds Tobacco Company to sec just how cigarettes are made. Ihere they were given pos'. cards which the company mailed for them. "V6 By HILL MADDEN Staff Writer Rumor circulates here of a distinct possibility that Game ock basketball games will not be televised this year. While the coliseum has provided a panacea for the multi ude of fans shut out of the field house in years past, it still s not the ultimate "cure-all" to the space problem con ronting USC. Thus the televising of the games remains !ssential. With Frank McGuire's progressive recruiting pro gram soon to propel USC into national prominence, it has become the viewpoint of many that Columbia will emerge as the basketball capital of the nation. However, without television, Columbia residents may find ittle basis for such a claim-or interest for that matter ,vith their actual viewing participation cut off. The only remaining media of communication left to them -aside from radio-would be that of the local newspapers xhere the reporting of Carolina athletics has left quite a bit :0 be desired. Therefore it is the hope here that the rumor is in deed unfounded, and that Athletic Director Paul Dietzel will soon render assurance that the basketball games will be televised. Two former Ganiecock basketball stars on the outside looking in: Frank Standard failed to make the final cut of the American 1asketball Association Houston Mavericks, while Jack Thonipswn sustained a hamstring injury with the [ndiana Pacers of the same league and has been placed on their injured list. Incidentally, let it not be overlooked that Frank McGuire has made it a point to look after the intf-rests of his players even after their playing days under him are over. Upon hearing of Standard's failure to catch on with Iouston, McGuire immediately went to work finding a place for his ex-pupil with the traveling all-star team in Spain. McGuire did the same for former Gamecock center Jim Fox, whose tour in Spain helped him to land a job in the NBA. Gamecock supporters will have a chance to see a pair of last year's basketball stars playing against each other with their new professional teams. On Thursday night, Jan. 16, the Phoenix Suns with Gary Gregor will take on the Atlanta Hawks and Skip Harlicka in a regular season NBA contest in the Carolina Coliseum. The game is being sponsored by the Columbia Jaycees, ,ind should be a dandy. It's getting hard to keep up! with some of the marks Tom Suggs and his teammates aret setting. Last week Suggs threw for an ACC record of five touch downs. Against Wake Forest he threw four, giving him a total of 12 for the season. That is a Carolina mark, break ing the old record of 10. The career recerd of most TI tsse is 18, held by John Gramilling. Suggs has the rest of this sea. son and two more years to surpass that mark. Six of his scoring throws have been to F:eddie Zeigler, and that ties the USC standard. Zeigler didin't score Saturday. but senior split end Johnny Greg I(. camle up with three, gi.ing him a career total of six. Those scores by Gregory Irtoko the ACC record for most TDl re ceptions in a single game. The two passes Zeigler caught set a Carolina record, as he does every time he makes a catch. In fact, four records: most career receptions, most single season receptions, and most yardage in a season and career. With two more games left, thi G cc with an improved front offensive line, and a defense that is turning the ball back to the offense a lot. more, should rewrite the record hooks. And with the likes of Suggs. 7.eigler, kicker Billy Dupre, and others returning next year, tihe, Gamecocks s h o u I d prove the maxim that records are 1miade to he broken.
