Jach of Spades By JOHN DAVID SPADE scLA0ffsjSj-jp Sports Editor This decade will be remembered in history for many accomplishments: great space feats, an era of vast techno logical advancement, and most of all, the crying out of the American Negro. In a recent article in Sports Illustrated, Jesse Owens, the Negro athlete who will always be remembered for his ac complishments in the 1936 Olympics, discussed the Negro athlete. Owens told of his admiration for the Negroes who participated in the Olympics this year, as Americans. He questioned the absence of such superstars as Lew Alcindor who abstained from the games because of their race. If Negroes are striving for equality, then the Olympic Games, in which the individual is stressed should be a stage on which they build respect and integrity for themselves as individuals, Negroes and as Americans. Those who stayed away from the games created a stigma of separation from their own race and from the spirit of individualism. One athlete who helped add to an American Negro heri tage was Charlie Scott. Scott will be causing havoc in the ACC this year along with his Tar Heel teammates. He will be a better player for having competed in the Olympic games, and a better indi vidual for knowing the other individuals who competed. Spencer Haywood, another Negro athlete on the Olympic basketball team, won the respect and admira tion of the Olympic Village and the world with his fan tastic play. Looking closer to home, little Kenny Dial, a 5'4" fullback came out for the frosh team at USC on his own. Dial is not a scholarship athlete, but he has stuck with the team and has easily been accepted by his teammates as one of our own. In the Biddies' game with N. C. State, he thrilled the crowd when he snared a screen pass and made some brilliant moves once he had the ball. The Negro athletes who raised black gloved hands during a medal ceremony at the Olympic games were not helping Black America. In their salute to Black Power they only released bitter sentiment both in America and around the globe. Black Power will never be a help to a Negro heritage, but young men like Scott, Hlaywood, and Dial will give the Negro his deserved place in society with their enthusiasm, guts, and individualism. Suggs, the soph QB from Lamar, set a school record for most com pletions in a game with 24 out of 37 hitting the mark. Those completions broke a rec ord set by Dan Reeves against Ne braska in '64.
