Biddies In Lasi By JOHN DAVID SPADE Sports Editor Carolina's undefeated Biddi, play their last home game Thur day against the N. C. State Wol lets. Last year both Pride Ratterri of USC and Johnny Clements < State posted undefeated fros seasons. The Carolina frosh have de. feated The Citadel and the Clemson frosh teams. Both ol these games have come at home Ratterree has three fin( quarterbacks in Tommy Rhodes Glen Morris and Ho Davies. These three will be relying c the running of Tommy Simmon a 5-9 fullback who weighs in ; 198, and Billy Ray Rice of Gaf ney, both of whom are scholai QB Rh Spirit, I By JEANINE SMITH Staff Writer Frosh I qu a rt c b a c k Tomiml lhodes give, the spirit at Cart lina as his primary reason fc coming to USC. Rhodes, nicknamned "Tailspin1 Tllommy by his high school tean, mates because of his scra1mblin in the backfield, led the Iliddic to a 21-14 victory over the ClIen son frosh last week. The 6-2, 193-pound back fron Norfolk, Va., was named All State for two ycars at Great Bridge High. His high school coach, Billy O'Brien, has com piled a coaching record of 63-5-2 over a seven-year span. When asked why he chos Carolina, Ithodes replied, "I (1 TOMMY RHODES cided41t on 'SC oIve'r other school because of the splectattr respon.I1 at the games. "came to Homecoming las year against Virginia. At th half the Gamecocks were trailin 17-0). lHut the crowds were sti yelling and as the team ran of the field they receivedl a standlin ovation. Football is a rough gam and it takes a lot of work ani time. Nobody wants to beat thei hearts out for peop)le who jus don't care.' Rthodes also likes Carolina be cause of its engineering depart ment. He wants to be a civil engineer after college. When asked about Columbia he compared it to Norfolk, as the two cities are about the same size and social activities are similar. The frosh (quarterblack's favoi ite hobby is tossing touchdlow passes to receivers .J immy M itch elI andl Greg Black. ''If you put the ball anywher near Mitchell, that boy wil! (cate it. He just has a knack abou catching the hall and getting int the open." Also receiving praise from Rthodes was fullback Tommy Simmons. "lHe's the hardest runner I've ever seen. I believe he'll easily make another War ren Muir." Rhodes talked of a bright ft ture for Carolina football becaus of the fact that USC has one< the finest coaching staffs in th country. "Coach D)ietzel always come after the games and tells us t keep up the goodl work. Coac Ratterree is a fine man also. He the type that works you to deat] On the field you'd like to take gun and shoot him, b)ut after game is over you see the result and yo,u love him for it," sai Rhodes. One of the main things a freshman quarterback has to learn is the snap from center which is different in college and bigh school ball. "Bo D)avies and Glen Morrii (The other fresh QB's) have ' Will I Home ship boys. But the Biddies won't be sta; Ls ing on the ground all of the tim s- as they have a fine crop of r f- ceivers. Jim Mitchell, who also per !e forms the punt and kickoff re. >f turn duties, has stood out as the h Biddies' primary pass target. Although Mitchell has only 1. pounds on his 5-10 frame, he ha the moves and speed to get in th open and catch the long bomb : well as the short pass. Quarterback Tommy R h o d e has praised the frosh offensiv line for giving him the protectic n he needs to get off passes. s, The defense has been spectacu it lar at moments and has look< f- flat at other times, much like th r- varsity Gamecocks. )des Give, ootball A been real helpful. We try to help each other as much as possible," said Rhodes. B ut on the field, Rhoides feel that the most embarrassing thin r is to he caught behind the line o scrimmniage. "llut that hasn't hap pened to ile much," admitte Rhodes, "because of our fine line. g Getting to the social side of lif S Rhodes said "'There are sur enough of them girl . These and other mistakes gave 1 Clemson's Ricky Gilstrap, the s highly sought-after Easley star of ea year ago, extra chances to get sthis offense going. Ratterree said at the beginning of the season that it is difficult elto form a solid team from boys i who have been playing so niany differ, ent types of football. 1- It may be a difficult task, but d the Biddies haven't lost for two e years, and that's a pretty good record. s Views: Lfnd Girls natural girls.
