STRAIGHT TALK From the ROUNDHOUSE By PAUL F. DIETZEL Director of Atidetics Welcome Freshmen! On behalf of the entire Department of Athletics here at USC, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the home of the Fighting Gamecocks. We hope that your stay here at Caro lina will be the greatest years of your life. They should be the happiest. Each year, the faculty and administrative staff of the University see another class graduate and go out to "take on the world." Some are eager to get started, most are sorry to leave; but a few are very happy to be gone. Why should this be? There seems to be a tendency in our present age that we should keep from "being involved." To sit on the edge of life but never to get into the thick of it. You know: "If I get involved and it doesn't reach my expectations, then I'll be disappointed !" Or, "I better not show any interest because that project may not get off the ground and I'd be laughed at!" What a crock! This is one of the great chances of your life, these next few years. The opportunity to jump in with both feet and ecome involved in one of the greatest Universities in America. Yes, I said one of the gra/extt in A merica. Oh, but there is a "kicker" involved. It only can be great if you make it great. For the University is you! Don't sit around and expect the other students to do the job. Or expect the faculty to make it great by themselves. The buildings and grounds can't do it either. The University is people-and you are the people from which it is fashioned. 'Get Involved' It's always a simple thing to let someone else do it and then sit around and growl about how poorily things are being done. You know that it's also simple to point out on Monday the mistakes the quarterback made on Saturday. (By Mon day, he's figured them out too!) IIow can you as an individual "get involved?" For one thing, you can really show interest in some of the things that make up a great university. I-low 'bout your cademics as a starter. And the publications. The arts. And music. And, in your Gamecock athletic teams. Your Fighting Gamecocks are one of the great rallying places for the entire University; the faculty, staff, and stu dents along with the alumni and friends of the University 6lsewhere. And this is a place where we all can have a tremendous #mount of fun! But, you can't have any fun if you don't get nvolved. How can you ever hope to share in the joys of mtogetherness" if you don't join up. You've got to die in defeat and be completely ecstatic in victory--but you'll miss out on both if you aren't involved. It's got to be WE! This is particularly true for your class--especially for the season that is upon us--football. You see, your class contains the first freshman football team we were able to recruit. We think they are really a great bunch who can be just about as good as you will make them. For they are your classmates and your team. We feel that you are really going to enjoy each other. And your Big Team-The Fighting Gamecock Football Team. We have been hard at it twice a day since the 30th of August. We are very few in numbers and small in stature. But your team is really a great bunch of young men. They are the type that you will enjoy knowing. They have tre mendous enthusiasm and hustle and they are anxious to do well for you. 'You Have A Part' IBut you have a p)art to do, too! Learn the cheers. And cheer and scream! Not this p)olite little yea team jazz. I mean, yell your guts out. If you leave the stadium and you're not "hoarse," you're not really with it! If you (10, maybe we can give you something to be yelling for. This is p)art of "giving of yourself." Get with it! Many people told me last year that they were dlisap pointed in the Carolina spirit. Frankly, our football last year didn't do much to create spirit! But we're going to. Enthusiasm starts like a brushfire-a tiny spark sets it off and it can grow into unbelievable proportions. But you've got to be there for the setting of the spark. When there's a pei) rally-go and see howv much fun it can be-if you make it fun. Jump in with both feet and see how much fun it can be. You have to give of yourself. You remember what I said about graduation. You know which ones really were glad to go-they were the ones who never got involved with anything except the "beefing!" And the ones who hated to leave? They are the ones who wvere givinig so tremendously of themselves to Carolina. The ones who were so involved in the school. No matter how much they gave, they were always the winners. Because, "What you give you will always have, but what you keel) is lost forever !" It's your University, your few years, and your life. God Sp)eed to you. Yours for a Greater Carolina Paul F. The injury disrupts the back field that was to have been one of the best in Gamecock history. l.en ;arnto will sw itch to left halfback and lutch Reeves will move to right half. Fred Zeiglar will fill the split end slot vacated by Reeves. As demonstrated by the shuffling of personnel the key problem this fall will be a lack of depth. Clemson had almost as many returning lettermen as hSC bad varsity candidates. Aside from lack of depth, the Camecocks will be characterized by a new quickness.
