SPORTSCOPEW By DONALD (AUGIMAN Sports Editor In looking back over the events that have taken place (luring the past year. one cannot help but be optimistic about the future of the Carolina sports program. Things looked pretty bleak during football season, but Paul Dietzel and his staff have done such an outstanding job recruiting that it is really hard not to smile when think ing of the success that will surely come. "Best" is perhaps the only way to describe what hap pened during the year. Frank McGuire's basketball team battled against tough opponents on and off the court and came away with USC's best record ever in the ACC. Jack Thompson's swimin ng team made the other A('C( teams sit u) and take notice - and the whole bunch will be back next year to challenge the supremacy of Mary land and North Carolina State. In baseball, first-year coach Jackie 1'owers guided the Gamecocks to their finest record in modern Iistory. All but three members of the team will be back next spring to try again for that elusive A('(' championship. Weems iBtskin had a mere I I hoys on his t 1rack squad, but that was enough to get the job done as t hey won five of six dual meets. Ron nie Palmer and Toy McCord will start in their places. Muir is a solid choice at full back. The number one defensive team lines up this way: At the ends will be Gene Schwarting, an experienced junior, and sophomore r e d s h i r t Ron Zukowski. Zukowski was a high school quarterback but has shown a tremendous knack for knifing through offensive lines. The tackle positions are being handled by senior Don Somma and Joe Komoroski. Both are down to 215 pounds and have gained a lot of speed since last season. Tim Bice, perhaps the team's best all-round performer, will start at the weak linebacker spot. Sen I ior Bob Cole is tops at the strong linebacker position, but he is re covering from a knee injury and will see limited action tonight. le will be spelled by M udeat Grant. lion Bunch has shown great im provement this year and will start at middle guard. The injury to the only experi enced defensive back, Wally Or. rel, plus the influx of new per sonnel has thrown the halfback, rover and safety positions into such a state of confusion that all spots are still open. Iop candidates include Carl Cowart, Candler Boyd, Wally Mled lin, Iobh Iarris, Don Buckner, Jim Mulvihill, Pat Watson and Andy, 'hayous.
