In looking back over the events that have taken place
(luring the past year. one cannot help but be optimistic
about the future of the Carolina sports program.
Things looked pretty bleak during football season, but
Paul Dietzel and his staff have done such an outstanding
job recruiting that it is really hard not to smile when think
ing of the success that will surely come.
"Best" is perhaps the only way to describe what hap
pened during the year. Frank McGuire's basketball team
battled against tough opponents on and off the court and
came away with USC's best record ever in the ACC.
Jack Thompson's swimin ng team made the other A('C(
teams sit u) and take notice - and the whole bunch will
be back next year to challenge the supremacy of Mary land
and North Carolina State.
In baseball, first-year coach Jackie 1'owers guided the
Gamecocks to their finest record in modern Iistory. All but
three members of the team will be back next spring to try
again for that elusive A('(' championship.
Weems iBtskin had a mere I I hoys on his t 1rack squad,
but that was enough to get the job done as t hey won five of
six dual meets.
Enough could never be said ab,,t vhat I;i11 Me('lain has
(one for tennis at USC. What was once tin Inahinit g stock
of the South is now the state champioon. And the picture next
year is a lot brighter.
For nme, the past year was a eonli)ilatoi o (>t many t hings.
It was seeing I14bby I1ryait race tiiro'gl an entire Northl
Carolina State team on his way to a 98-yard plunt return and
a new A(' record
Admiritng the courage of 1l('l ( ;arnt o when he took a
beating week after week bilt refused to give ainvthing less
than a slpreme effort . . .
Not being able to talk for three (lays after watching five
guys mop u) the Carolinta Fiheli louse with a supposedly
superior North Carolina team . . .
W:ttching a tennis match for the first time :and hating
to see the final set finish so quicklV
Seeing Lyn llurkhol(er cnme off Ilie bcil(h' in mi(l-seastoin
and play the way everyone who knows him had always hoped
he would .. .
Di)sco'erinig that athletes are great Ie'opIle to know . . .
Spending matny. many hours in 'h (ou n coc'k office each
week (loing something which made ein realy feel a part of
Carolina.
It. has been a great year . . . \hi'e did it all go?

Spring
By DON IIULT

A team termed by Coach Paul
1)ietzel as just about his smallest l
1W,r (in size as well as numbers),
wincs up spring football practice
tonight with the annual Garnet
and 1i-ck game at 7:30 in Caro
lina Stadium.
Although only an exhibition,
players will be playing with extra
zest as many are seeking to im
press the coaches and win start
ing berths for next fall's cam
paign.
Spring practice, since it began
April 17, has seen the team's
defensive units holding the up
per hand over the offense.
The defense has much more
spied than last year's squad. And
on offelnse the coaching staff in
stalled new formations; there has
be'en a constant juggling of per
sonnel into Various positions, and
the quarterback spot has been
filled by many different candi
datos hecause of baseball, injuries
and experimentation.

very aggressive and has excellent
speed.
.Jin Gobble, at 230 pounds,
the biggest ian on the squad, is
the top center. lie has attracted
the attention of all the pro
scouts who have visited Caro

Two-year starter Slike Vair

smart little field general, is
highly-qualified stand-in.

Tonight
Durable halfbacks Ben Garnto
and Benny Galloway, who ably
proved themselves last season, are
suffering from minor injuries and
will sit out tonight's game. Ron
nie Palmer and Toy McCord will
start in their places.
Muir is a solid choice at full
back.
The number one defensive team
lines up this way:
At the ends will be Gene
Schwarting, an experienced junior,
and sophomore r e d s h i r t Ron
Zukowski. Zukowski was a high
school quarterback but has shown
a tremendous knack for knifing
through offensive lines.
The tackle positions are being
handled by senior Don Somma
and Joe Komoroski. Both are
down to 215 pounds and have
gained a lot of speed since last
season.
Tim Bice, perhaps the team's
best all-round performer, will start
at the weak linebacker spot. Sen
I ior Bob Cole is tops at the strong
linebacker position, but he is re
covering from a knee injury and
will see limited action tonight. le
will be spelled by M udeat Grant.
lion Bunch has shown great im
provement this year and will start
at middle guard.
The injury to the only experi
enced defensive back, Wally Or.
rel, plus the influx of new per
sonnel has thrown the halfback,
rover and safety positions into
such a state of confusion that all
spots are still open.
Iop candidates include Carl
Cowart, Candler Boyd, Wally Mled
lin, Iobh Iarris, Don Buckner, Jim
Mulvihill, Pat Watson and Andy,
'hayous.
All of them have speed, but this
will be the area where the team
will he made or broken.
