Dave Mead( Top Defens S o p h o m o r e linebacker Dave Meadow, of Aiken, was the top defensive player for the Gamecocks against Maryland last Saturday, becoming the first lineman to win the "Cock of the Walk" honor. Meadow scored 80 per cent when films of the 14-2 loss were graded, placing him in the "championship" category. He made five unassisted tackles to earn the nomination. Actually, twa piayers had higher scores than Meadow. Defensive end Johnny Glass had a perfect 100 per cent, but he was in the game only four plays. He b l o c k e d a Maryland punt for a safety to produce the Gamecocks' only points in the game. The next highest scorer was mid die guard Dave Grant with 88 per cent, but he was in the game only eight plays. Linebacker Bill Dickens, who scored 77 per cent to place in the "winner" category, had the most individual tackles, seven, in addi tion to one assist. Another "winner" was the sea son's leading tackler, linebacker Bob~ Cole with 78 per cent. The competition began with ten nis. On Wednesday, Oct. 5, McClin tock captured the dormitory-town championship. Thursday was sorority day on the courts and Alpha Delta Pi took the sorority championship. On Monday, Oct. 10, Diane Clay poole and Linda Barnes, represent ing McClintock d o r m, defeated Harriet Coleman and Luddie King of Alpha Delta Pi, making McClin tock Dorm campus champions. In softball, independents repre senting the d o r n s and town, teamed together to defeat the so rorities. The f i r s t game was played on Wednesday, Oct. 12, and the independents won by an eight run margin, 20-12. Thursday, the sororities defeated the independents by the close scort of 16-15, and on Monday the inde pendents went on to win 14-11. N e x t in the competition was bowling, which began on Wed., Oct 19, with the dorms competing. Mc Clintock came out on top again. Ou Monday McClintock went on to de feat the sorority champs, Delta Delta Delta. Basketball got under way this week in the women's gym and Pea body gym.
