Pouring over old editions of The jantecock and the Garnet and Illack, it was discovered by one 3amceock reporter that Sigma Chi Derby Day is the oldest spring so ial function that is still being ob ierved. DERBY DAY The exact age of Carolina's Jerby competition is yet a puzzle, aithough a 1957 Gamecock reveals that the grandpappy of all derby lays took place on the campus of the University of California in the aarly 30's. Last year Sigma Chi's boasted that their outing was being en joyed here at the University for the twentieth consecutive year. A stack of 1945 Gamecocks, how ever, failed to mention the estab SUITS PRINT by -at W doo ( . i siso h esn naze o bue o coe i an brows sotwerDeatmn Armn tr ,t il Scenes .enealogy ishment of derbying at Carolina. A 1946 Garnet and Black, on the ther hand, did mention that the irst annual Derby Day was a uccess, but it is not clear whether he event was held in 1945 or 1946. Still another complication sets n when a 1958 Gamecock report tates that the first Derby Day or USC was in 1947. GREEK WEEK The genealogy of Greek Week vas less complicated, but also less :onsistent. It seems to be the :hild of a formerly long standing [nter - Fraternity Council social veekend held at first in early February and later in the spring. 'he first official Greek Week in -luded a formal dance on Satur lay, with music by the Dorsey Brothers band. When first established, the 3reek Week activities incorporated Jhe Sorority and Fraternity stunt ,ights. In 1957 fraternity skits had to be previewed (i.e. censored) by a :ommittee before appearing before the public. Also in that year. a Friday night concert and a Saturday afternoon concert were added to Lhe weekend formal, all officially Linder the heading of Greek Week. The next year the Saturday night concert was replaced by an informal dance, and Zeta and Pika were proclaimed winners of stunt night. Finances for Greek Week he -ame a major problenm in recently past years, causing the event to be liscontinued in 196.4 and 1965. It will resume this year as a joint project of IFC and Panhellenic ouncil, and will include a number >f innovations from past years. "LITTLE 500" "Little 500," Sigma Nu spon ;ored bicycle and tricycle races, have only a short legacy. The first contest was held on April 28. 1961, for fraternity boys only. Over the years, the Sigma Nu's have added the sorority tricycle race and the "Miss Little 500" 'ontest. And speaking of beauty contests, the "Miss Venus" competition held Jui ing Derby Day was the real :rowd-drawer back in 1957 or so. I.et's ree what turns heads this Ifternoon.
