A student, or reasonable facsimile, stum bled down out of the stands and down the steps drunk out of his mind. . . . He created all the entrance impact of Zorro; everyone just laughed and laughed and laughed and nobody tried to help him. Then the police came and carted him away. As they carried out their assigned duty, the cheering changed to booing from the suddenly indignant crowd. We sure are fickle not to be able to decide whose side we're on. On Greeks E Rush has been in full swing, or in the case of some of the fraternities, swagger. . . . And, as in every rush, some people have gotten trampled. It's ironic that the Greek system, founded on friendship, inevitably hurts people's feelings. Getting into a fraternity or sorority here is not a matter of life or death. Just because Stop, Line Up, Go Until last week students have always charged across Green Street, heedless of traffic, like a herd of bulls let into pasture. If a car ever took it upon itself to be come a bulldozer, we would all become ham burger. With this in mind, the school has provided for the painting of white lines, clever over lapping rectangles, not unlike some of the work done by the Beginner's Design class. A few yards of painted lines are a poor (but economical) excuse for what's really needed-a ramp extending clear over Green Street, or what will eventually come about, the closing off of Green Street. Since the University HAS gone to all the trouble of painting lines for us, however, we should show our adaptability and use them maturely. Walk along the line. Cling our feet to it as if it were a tightrope. *'fhe lines are better than nothing, but while they were at it, why wasn't a stop) sign put up)? A stop sign would be slightly more familiar to motorists than a bunch of lines. Maybe it wvould clutter up) the sidewalk. To The Freshmen . .e School Spirit F By GEORG(E MAIIAFEE ('ollege li fe. JOHN ROCKHOLZ wd Behavior It's irrelevant to guess what kind of spirit prompted the booing squad. Half the people there had the wierd illusion a football game is a cocktail bash. No doubt the high aca demic pressure here got to us. Any AA booklet can deliver a stirring lecture on Staying Sober: that's not the point. Those officers weren't there to enjoy the game. Our taxes pay for them to baby-sit us. Respect for authority was something we should have learned in Ding Dong school in a book titled, "The Policeman is Your Friend." tearing Gifts Phlamma Gamma doesn't give you a bid is no reason to slash your wrists or take hem lock. The all-time consuming two weeks of bat ing, dating and rating are about to subside, and the Greeks will settle back into their small, though prominent, place in Carolina society, flat exhausted. But while we're at it, don't adopt the op l)osite extremist view of the Very Independ ants. "The campus is :,plit into two groups," they say, waving their flags. "It's Us and Them." You wonder if they don't throw hand gren ades back and forth at night between fra ternity row, the men's dorms and fraternity row. Nothing could be more exaggerated. There are two political parties in America too, but that doesn't mean all of us are either Demo crats or Republicans. A fraternity or sorority will not give any one, or take from them, an identity. These organizations promote scholarship, activity and friendship. They have deep meaning, national scope, big parties . . . but they are NOT cssciail. There are plenty of other places here for us to fling our energies into. . . . Student Union, the Y, religious organizations,, pub lications, intramural sports, service clubs, political clubs, social clubs, intellectual clubs, atll p)anting for eager new members. Dates for the Davidson fresh men for the mixers of the first two week-ends were arranged by a computer. Questionnaires com pleted by Converse and Queens co-eds were fed to the computer along with vital statistics of the Davidson freshmen. The follow ing day the young men involved received IBM cards with their date's name printed on the top. Some of the results were drastic, but numerous activities were sponsored for the week-ends, in cluding movies for those who pre ferred not to "mix" their part ners. With rush in full force on the campus right now, the Crim,on. White of the University of Ala bama offers this traditional dia logue, which sorority members and rushees alike probably feel they have presented at one time or another, with slight variations and similar afterthoughts: "Hi!" (spoken with practiced sincerity) "We're so glad to have you back today." The rushee replies, "'hank you, I'm glad to be back. Your house is so pretty." (But those fuchsia draperies have got to go . ..) "Thank you, the draperies are new. A decorator from New York suggested them. What are you majoring in?" (Aninial taming . . . since you're such a pig?) "I'lome Ec." t I'm gonna get my M rs. degree.) "llow's rush?" the sorority girl inevitably asks. "Fun." (lIot as -.) "'ou surely look neat and cool in this heat." "Thank you. Aren't you tired? (You look like a truck hit you.) "Oh, no. It's fun." ( My feet hurt, my head aches, my back hurts from hending over, my knees are raw, and this con versation is putting me to sleep.) t e 6Jitor fic; the badly needed space was going to waste temporarily; and the driveway couldn't possibly be opened that same (lay because the cement had not even been poured to cross the ditch. I am sure that maniy other people are in my position and would rather pay the fine than spendii ai moirning conte'sting it in court.
