SPRING HAS "SPRUNG" on dents have come out of hilmerai Summer Va Or Short A The approaching summer will find many USC students lazing in the sun, attending summer school or perhaps racking up the much-needed coins participating in that hazardous occupation called work. Most students, however, will find the time heavy on their hands after the first few weeks of rela tive freedom. These students can turn a possible wasted summer into a profitable one by utilizing their spare time. Volunteer Work Interested students may volun teer for work at any of the thou sand-and-one organizations that need help badly but are unable to pay for it. In some cases, they will provide room and board. S., usually rponsored by religious or govern mental organizations. But there are many overseas as well, and this may be the best chance to work abroad this summer. rravel Abroad The American Friends Service Committee, best-known organiza tion in this field, takes nearly 600 college students for 20 work programs in the U. S. and abroad. Projects range from running "playmobiles" for children in mi grant labor camps to school con struction in Mexican villages and work in correctional institutions for juvenile offenders. Normally, maintenance is paid %ut no travel expenses. Idle time could be well spent in learning to type. Any investment of time or money made acquiring office skills can almost surely be more than made up in the next summer or two. Specialized typ ing and stenography-training as a medical secretary or legal sec retary, for example-are sure-fire pastports into the job world. Other Ideas Other interesting ideas are to study a foreign language or to draw up an intensive reading schedule to cover all the books you have always intended to rend. And, if scientifically oriented, you might simply present yourself to a top-notch research scientist. The summer provides Carolina students with the opportunity of wisely investing their spare time. 'Fever' Seizes Spring has again escaped from hibernation, and the world is fast becoming a coloring book of many hues. Along with spring comes that ancient affliction known as spring fever. Fortunately the medical world has yet to discover anti biotics or a prevention for the malady. The plague knows no age limit and strikes "youngsters from one to a hundred and one." The symptoms are a general listlessness and a profound dis like of being surrounded by four walls, especially walls with black boards. Students are often most ad versely affected by the virus. It was for this purpose that the tra ditional sport known as hookey was invented. Often it is synon ymous with baseball, hikes, or per haps even hird watching. At any rate it beats professor watchinL. Even professors are not exempt from this plague. Some even go FO far as to open up the windows and breathe three breaths of fresh air. It should be noted, however, that they disguise their pain very efficiently under a pretense of te rness. Sad to say, they often are ex (client actors and cause their stu dents to lose their psychological distance. The birds continue to chirp and 'lowers still bloom despite the un spring - like activities being pur suiod indoors. The most wonderful part of this disease occurs with the onset of s e v e r e comlications. The *spirits rise, the heart beats faster and the world seems brighter.
