Roland Brown also vaulted in fine fashion for the Cocks until his pole broke at 14 feet. Brown got 14 feet and finished fifth in the event. In the shorter races, the 60-yard run and the 70-yard hurdles, the Cocks were ably represented by Fulton Dukes and David Gatch. Dukes got off to a bad start in the 60-yard finals, but gathered enough speed to cross the finish line in fifth place. Gatch finished sixth in the high hurdles. The team, composed of George Pappas, John Mitchum, Ken Smith, and Bob Taylor, closed strong to beat Virginia in the time of 8:24. Mitchum Gets Two Medals Johnny Mitchum was the only runner for the Gamecocks to place in two events. Mitchum ran pre liminaries in the 1000-yard run, the fastest leg on the two-mile relay, and a fifth-place finish in the 1000-yard run. The Biddies didn't fare as well as the Gamecocks as the freshman team scored only one point. Mike Eidson finished a dismal fifth in the 1000-yard run to insure the Biddies of that one point. Best In History In a strange pool at College Park, Maryland with thirty-five h u n d r e d screaming Terrapin swimming fans looking on. the Carolina mermen pushed them Iselves for the finest showing by a USC team in the history of the ACC, placing sixth. There were no individual win ners for the Gamecocks, but fifth place finishes in both the medley relay and the freestyle relay gave USC enough points to place ahead of Virginia and Clemson. In both events new school records were set by South Carolina. Although unable to make the finals, Garnet French and Daryl Pettus both set school records in their specialties, the backstroke -nd the butterfly. French was '.imed in 2:18.1 for the 200-yard backstroke and Pettus splashed his way to a 2:13.1 clocking in the 200-yard fly. In a meet held for ACC fresh man teams South Carolina placed third behind powerful Maryland and North Carolina. Diver Chic Langnehs was the standout for the Biddies in winning his event.
