Pisto By REGINA S. GALGANO Staff Writer The rivalry between Carolina and Clemson began with the first football game played between the two schools in 1896. But it cli maxed in 1902 when a trans parency of a gamecock crowing over a tiger almost caused blood shed. At this time Carolina scored a notable upset over Clemson of 12-6, which was followed by melees which almost resulted in a bloody battle. According to a history of the University by Dr. Daniel Hol lis, an uptown tobacco store had been decorated with colors and emblems of both schools. The Caro lina display featured a Gamecock transparency crowing over a tiger. City officials begged Carolina students not to carry the display. But to their dismay Christie Benet, a young Columbia lawyer and as sistant coach who acted as spokes man for the Carolina students, re fused the request on the grounds that it was made as a result of Clemson threats. Following the parade, an Army officer in charge of the corps of Clemson cadets dismissed them on the State House grounds and 'retired." At this time a senior called to one of the sophomores in the crowd say ing, "McKissick, are you armed?" The young Rion McKissick showed him a pistol and the senior was heard to cry, "McKissick, make every shot count!!" Although the two groups did not come to blows at this time, the beginning of a tradition was conceived. From that time, some sort of tiger or "cowager"-half tiger, half cow-has been burned before every Carolina-Clemson football clash. In the late 40's aid early 50's when Big Thursday was a reality rather than a memory, Carolina students and faculty had a silent pact that if the University won the game. cuts taken on the fol lowing Friday and Saturday were "free." The pledge class of this local fraternity took over the tradition from McBryde Brotherhood when it became defunct several years ago. When McBryde pledges made the tiger, it was half cow-and called the "cowager." The work on the tiger usually begins when several large burlap bags are dyed yellow. These bags are sewn together and packed with about 300 pounds of news 01 print and firecrackers. When the tiger takes shape he is hauled outside and painted. Originally the stripes painted on the lengthy tail represented the number of years the two foot ball teams had clashed. But now, the length of the tail signifies the number of members in Maxcy a foot for each active, and half a foot for each pledge. There is a story that while the tiger is being made in the fra. ternity lounge in Snowden, "Wal. do"-the big Gamecock worn by Maxcy pledges at ball games comes to life and tries to devour the tiger before he is completed.
