Swingin Climbs I By PATI CROSBY Staff Writer The Swinging Medallions! USC students remember well the night that this local band unexpectedly gave a free demonstration of thei talents in the Russell House Audi torium. Although impromptu, this per formance was evidence enough thai the Swinging Medallions are defi. nitely on their way up. The individual members of the group all had their beginnings ir different local high school bands Since the joining of their careers they have risen to the stature of a college band. Recent engage ments have taken them to various universities and beach clubs. Group o Success have appeared in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Due to a transportation problem, they had to turn down a request from Okla homa. They are typically a rhythm and blues group; much of their ma terial comes from songs by the Impressions, Major Lance, the Beatles, James Brown, and the Tams. This kind of music never fails to bring a crowd, and in the case of the Swinging Medallions this is especially true. The Beatle-type audience at a Florida engagement is particularly noteworthy. Police men had to carry away a couple of screaming girls who had tempo rarily lost "control" of themselves. The future looks bright for the Swinging Medallions. R. C. A., Co lumbia, A. B. C., Paramount, and Mercury have sent special delivery telegrams to them requesting tapes. Besides this, the name Swinging Medallions is on every major re cording list in the Southeast. Look magazine will feature the group in the near future. Three disc jockeys have called long distance to request records which haven't even been made yet. The members of the Swinging Medallions from the University are Rick Godwin, singer and trumpet; Freddy Pugh, upside-down sax; and Perrin Gleaton, guitar. Others are John McElrath, singer and piano; Joe Morris, drummer; Steve Caldwell, singer and sax; Caroll Bledsoe, singer and trumpet; and Brent Forseth, sax, flute and piano. A graduate student in psychology at Carolina, H. G. Har ras, is the group's manager. BEAT CLEMSON! That was the day you threw on the same slacks and shirt you'd worn for the last two days. You didn't have time to shave. Thus you reached your favorite before class coffee. spot and the first thing a friend said to you was,' "You look good today." So you wondered for a while what was wrong with said friend's eyes, or worse yet, what in the heck do you usually look like? Incidents such as the above, which do often occur, make one: doubtful of the purpose of com pliments. Everyone likes a compliment, but what exactly is a compliment? And should everyone like them? To consider this question more thoroughly, let me divide compli ments into categories according to their relative circumstances. First of all is the date compli ment. This is probably the most common. For a girl to exist through an entire date without a compliment is quite unusual. Under ordinary circumstances the escort will open the evening with a com pliment, something like, "You look stunning this evening, Cordelia." To which Cordelia remarks to her self, "Well, I should hope so . . . I've been getting ready for the last three hours." If the beau is lucky, she might even tell him NTS IERE WMU1 a m p MYD. This first compliment of the vening can be accepted as sincere. Any others will have to be con sidered as attempts at flattery. For instance, over a late cup of roffee a date may comment that it is very unusual to find a girl (or guy) who is nice looking, who has a good personality, and who is intelligent too. The best answer to such a remark is, "low do you know I'm intelligent?" Of course you are, but said date has no grounds for the assumption. Then again there is nothing so frustrating as having sincere com ment negated by a pompous reply. At a (lance a coed was surprised to hear that her escort actually had a good singing - along - with - the - music voice. So she told him. "You have a beautiful voice." lis r(ply? "I know, and I'm a fabulous (lancer, too." No wonder so many people have declined to use the art of compli menting. The next group of compliments 'Cha "Whether it's the fishing or bas always carry 'Chap Stick'," says star. "During the winter. I leave z go into the cold night air. That A favorite in Canada. The simple state nent, "I like your dress," can nean anything from, "I have one ust like it," to "It's a shame it mnakes you look so distorted." To be truthful, girls are not always sincere in their compli ments because they prefer to keep friends rather than be honest. A man, on the other hand, feels no qIualms about speaking the blunt truth (or what he sees as the Lruth). Heware the male friend who says your hair looks good todayl.
