Antic ipating a quiet, undisturbed snooze, or as Shakespeare put it, sleep that "knits up the ravell'd sleave l of care," you collapse, brow-beaten, on your bed. The old fellow has since been contradicted in e r c i f u 11 y. The "nightly theater of the mind" is hovering beyond sleep. Attempt ing to peep behind the curtain is Professor Emeritus Nathaniel Kleitman, hailed as the world's foremost authority on sleep. With i the aid of our own kind-uni- I versity students paid three dollars a night to serve as guinea pigs --he has exploded sleep-myths. During your quiet, undisturbed snooze, you are an audience to i dreams that occur on the dot every ninety minutes during cycles of crest (dream) and trough (sleep). These dreams lengthen as the night, or morning as the case may be, progresses. The last is nearly four times longer than the first. The total time spent in reverie is about one hour and thirty min utes of an eight-hour sleep. Dreaming is a relaxed state,,: outwardly accompanied only by 1 eve movements. Sigmund Freud pointed out the eaning of dreams. According to m, there is a link between some irt of every dream and some tail of the dreamer's waking ate. Symbolism plays an im >rtant part in many dream vi ons. Freud also described a rect relation between dreams and ental derangement. He theorized at dreams contain thoughts hich are concealed and are not the conscious state of the in vidual (repression). The king and queen which pa ide through your visions are us ally none other than your pa mnts. You say you dreamed of room? Nonsense. It was a oman. Robbers in dreams are is father. Ghosts that swoop )wn upon the tormented dreamer re usually feminine persons wcked out in white nightgowns. There are several most typical eams. I)o you dream of being ased by a gang of thugs or fleeing from a snorting train? reams of pursuit are anxiety eams. They may also represent isession. Don't tell your girl u dreamed she was endangered: is type may be a repressed death ish. You say you dream of fall g through space? Keep it under Ur hat; this usually indicates elding to temptation. Flames .rackling in your sleep may fore warn the dreamer of a hidden urge Lo commit some aggressive act, as arson. DJreams of missing a train may ne representative of trying to quell fear of death, as well as fear of missing a long-sought opportunity. Flying in dreams illustrates a de sire to overcome life's difficulties and be free, and also sex. Dreams f being, blushingly, undressed usually evince a desire to feel humiliated. Their main undertone is shame. Dreams of being res ,ued are linked with giving birth nd reassurance about rivalry with your parents. And lastly, dreams of taking exams (yes, in sleep, too) are a reflection of the "mem ories of punishments we suffered as children." Seen. Heard.
