'63 Gameco Carolina won its first football vietory of the '63 season Saturday afternoon, the Reds defeating the Whites 14-6. The annual affair drew no more than a small size crowd of 2,000 to Carolina Stadium. Considering, however, the absence of Gill, Anderson, Reeves, and DiVenere, to mention a few, the attendance was as good as could have been expected. "Seven or eight of the linemen from the second unit didn't even practice," Coach Bass added. Thus the inter-squad game gave fans no more than a glimpse of the '63 Bird team. Reeves Concerning Dan Reeves, Bass said of the inj"-ed star-"He will be ready soon and better than ever." Looking toward the '63 season which begins September 21 with Duke, the head man of the Game cocks seems to think the teams to beat next year will be Clemson Duke, and Maryland. This year with Carolina having one of the big gest lines they've ever experienced Bass doesn't expect the boys up front to get pushed around as ir years past. And with a f'instance such as 275-pound Mike Kirk patrick, who feels like arguing? Backfield Some of our personnel shouk give Terrapins, Tigers, and ever the Devils themselves, trouble. The following parade of Gamecock backs Intramurals At Carolina Given Praise Every college and university emphasizes an athletic program Most of us need only to turn t< the sports pages of any metropoli. tan newspaper to see this. Our varsity teams receive vasi coverage in all major sports anc even in the minor ones. Bui the athletic program of a univer sity must cover more than the comparatively limited opportun ities on the varsity squads; it therefore, must embrace an intra mural program for the rest of the student body. Primarily for those who do no have time for varsity sports 0: cannot for some other reason par ticipate, intramurals have growl to a position of prominance, es pecially here at Carolina. A survey has revealed in mor detail just how the student value this program. The following quote were obtained concerning the valuw of intramurals to the average stu dent: George Williams, curren leading scorer in basketball-"In tramural sports provides the stu dent with good, clean athleti recreation, thusly it enrichs botl personality and character"; Jac] Hatchell, Freshman track runne and intramural participant-" In tramurals makes everyone in zone or fraternity feel that the can help their fellows. A ba thing is that intramurals aren emphasized as much at Carolin as on other campuses."~ From the above we might cor cdude that our intramural pr< gram is a good thing, with definit good points, but if it is less en phasized than elsewhere, then: must be brought up to superic ranking, just as we strive to bette all of USC. #EW! I Marty Rosen (6-0, 195, Junior) I "Did real fine in spring practice this season, if that is any indication - of what he'll do this year we'll be all right. Shifty, big, fast, and hard to bring down." Co-Captain I Sammy Anderson (5-10, 175, , Senior) "Anderson and Jowers are our fastest runners. Sammy has a knack for going the distance." (Anderson was recently voted one of the co-captains this season for 1 the Gamecocks.) Jeff Jowers (6-1, 185, Soph.) I "Terrific runner, has good speed, 1 should see a lot of action this ( year." In Saturday's game Jeff ran the ball 12 times for 37 yards and scored the 2nd and 3rd teams' i only touchdown.
