Joan Baez, the darling of Har vard and Washington Square beat and folkniks, has enraged her more conventional devotees by her re fusal to cut more than one record a year. Everyone a b o uld be thoroughly placated upon hearing her most recent album, however, for it is by far her best. Recorded live at her famed SRO Carnegie Hall concert, this record is conclusive evidence that Miss Baez is the leading folk artist of her genera tion. Her interpretation of "Black is the Color" is especially stirring, for, as in so many of her songs, the voice is pure and versatile, the g.uitar accompaniment subtle and unobstrusive, the words rich and alive. A record library is out-of.. date and ill-conceived if it does not include these gifts of Joan Baez. (Vanguard: VRS9112) "Focus" is doubtlessly the most imp)ortant jazz recording of the year. Stan Getz is featured impro vising to the symphonic poems of Eddie Sauter. The fluid sounds of Gotz' t e n o r saxophone weave through, accent and extend the vast range of musical moods created by Sauter's capricious and haunting melodies. Dirt Off And Play merely a collaboration of two first rate artists; rather, it presents an entirely new approach to modern music: the p)olish of delicate string comp)ositions is given depth from the warmth and spontaneity of im promptu interpretation. Though this technique has been tried before, it has failed, and only here are the results exciting and entirely pleas ing.
