The cast of 21 in the three-act Metatheatrc And Way Ii Metatheatre, by Lionel Abel, may well become the controversial theatre book of the year. It intro duces a new word, metatheatre and a new way of looking al drama. Abel's thesis is that tragedy, al though a permanent horizon for all playwrights, has not been really a characteristic form since the tim< of Racine. He contends that au thentic tragedy in the moderr theatre is unrealizable today. Realism, on the other hand, car give satisfaction but it does noi exalt, as tragedy did. Therefore, a new drama form has evolved which Abel calls metatheatre. How can the modern dramatist depict injustice, yet keep it at a safe, contemplative dis tance, necessary and vital for the successful play? Only through metatheatre, says Abel. Unlike tragedy, which accepts the image of the world, meta theatre implies reluctance to do so. In tragedy man is vulnerable to fate; in metatheatre fate can be overcome. Mr. Abel's essays explain the na ture and importance of meta theatre. A discussion of The Con. nection, won the Longview Award, and is included in this volume.
