Town Theater Pre vie w s Of Helea "The Miracle Worker" slated tc open March 8 at the Towr Theatre, has been previewed "the most difficult production ever to have been attempted by an amateui group." Author William Gibson's por. trayal of Annie Sullivan, and her struggle to bring education and meaning to the child Helen Keller brings intense, touching drama to the stage. A sub-plot, of the strug gle between hard-,headed Captain Keller and his son (Helen's brother) Jimmy, adds an inter woven light mood and dry humor. The cast of 21 in the three-act Metatheatrc And Way Ii Metatheatre, by Lionel Abel, may well become the controversial theatre book of the year. It intro duces a new word, metatheatre and a new way of looking al drama. Abel's thesis is that tragedy, al though a permanent horizon for all playwrights, has not been really a characteristic form since the tim< of Racine. He contends that au thentic tragedy in the moderr theatre is unrealizable today. Realism, on the other hand, car give satisfaction but it does noi exalt, as tragedy did. Therefore, a new drama form has evolved which Abel calls metatheatre. Metatheatre, says the author, is the correct term to describe the only drama form possible for the contemporary playwright who is concerned with the serious themes The deep South of Columbia is playing cowboy. Cynthia Gilliam and Worthlyn White star as Annie and Helen, respectively. Taking place in the late 1880's, the play is based on the actual ex periences of Annie Sullivan, from her arrival as a governess in the Keller household, through her cli mactic breakthrough with Helen. The remainder of the story is told in the advances in work with the handicapped made by Helen Keller throughout her life. : New Word i Drama of our time. Also scheduled for publication March 7 are the Complete Plays and Prose by Georg Buchner, translated and with an Introduc tion by Carl Richard Mueller. Lionel Abel is a well known critic and playwright. His Absalom won two awards as the best Off Broadway play in 1956. In 1958 he had a Guggenheim Fellowship for dramatic literature. In that case *reek 31 Girls Po Panhellenio Thirty-one women of Carolina will perform in Claire Booth's "The Women," next Monday, February 25, in Drayton Hall at 7:30. "The Women" is an adult comedy About a group of sophisticated society women who are planning to ret divorces and marry each other's husbands. With a modern setting and no male characters, the performance will be a staged reading; that is, there are no special props or scenery, and the players will read their scripts rather than memorize them. There are, however, three acts and twelve scene changes. Ruthie Henderson, member of Pi Reta Phi sorority, will be directing the play. David Dreiman is serv ing as Technical director. As Panhellenic Council's main function in Greek Week this year, the play will substitute Stunt Night and still have all seven sororities participating.
