The past three r years have not been fruitful for r this sport at Carolina, and as a e result the efforts of a few dedicated individuals have been overlooked. s The Gamecocks have not won a r meet since 1960 and even then the c team reconi was only 2-8. The team does i officially open the 1963 season ur the Indoor Conference Meet March, however, an informal m with North Carolina has be planned for the 23rd of Februt at Chapel Hill, N. C. This meet v give the team a chance to run K the same board track where 1 Conference Meet i3 held. The team will be strong in I dashes, but there is very little del in the distance events. Seniors E Wowra and Robbie Stanford v be the leading sprinters in the ] and 220-yard dashes. They will ceive support from sophomore Jc Hemmer who placed well in 1 Freshman State Meet last ye Hemmer and Wowra may be cal upon to team with quartermi B Bland Addison and Eddie Ken3 ' in the mile relay. n The middle distance event will handled by Eddie Cribb and I1 Smith. Cribb placed third last yi in the ACC Championships. Smi - who is only a sophomore, shov t promise in the 880 and mile l, e year. Alan Rose completes the t of distance runners. He had a vE successful cross-country season s finished tenth in the Conferei r Meet. Carolina will be strongest in I hurdle events, where Carl Hendrii son and Neil Atkinson will form strong duo. Hendrickson placed w ' last year in the State and Conf, ence Meets, and can be considei e one of the top hurdlers in the C< ference. The field events will be woefu weak without the services of Bi t Gambrell. As yet there is no c in sight to fill Billy's shoes in I broad jump and javalin. Bask baller Ronnie Collins will be I s number one high jumper, but he 1 - no jumping mate. n Billy Nies will handle the disi r and shot put as he has done I r past two years. This year's track season will e high-lighted by the first Carol Relay Meet. It is hoped that t s meet will become so popu throughout the East and Southei that some of the track powers the country will attend. Coach Noe was satisfied with his team's performances because they bounced back after a period of - frustration and mistakes in the first ten minutes of the second half. The Gamecock will play host to the Cavaliers from the Univer sity of Virginia tomorrow at 2 P.M. The game will be regionally t televised. In last year's television appearance, the Birds defeated North Carolina State. The girls from Lower South now have another first to add to their first in the bridge tourna ment. The final game was held in the Field House. Lower South and its big basketball rival - Upper South -- battled it out in a very seriously fought game. Both teams- showed fine spirit and athletic poise in not relaxing for one minute of this ex citing contest. Tension broke in the final minutes as Lower South pulled it out of the fire with an excellent display of teamwork. A surprising team from McClin tock took third place to round out the final standings. Helen Zimmerman was h i g h scorer of the tournament as she blistered the net with a game high of 26 points.
