Try a pack Gamecocks Bass Says, BY FRED SCIIUMPERT Sports Editor The old phrase of "It's for the birds" seems to be invading the Carolina football team. Two out of the ten games scheduled have fell by the wayside, both of them left marks of defeat on the Gamecocks . . . at least that's what the final scores indicated. In their season opener Coach Marvin Bass' three units went down fighting, but they waited til late in the game to really start "flapping." At Duke last Saturday, the Gamecocks took their second set back. After a first half that ap peared nothing but Carolina's ballgame, the Blue Devils struck back and handed the Birds a 21-8 loss. Carolina's only score came with 50 seconds left in the ball game when quarterback Dan Reeves ran for four yards off his right tackle. With three minutes and 10 sec- a onds remaining in the first half, Reeves intercepted a pass intended for Duke halfhack, Jay Wilkinson. Reeves passed and ran the ball down to the Duke five-yard line. With seconds ticking off, lie passed agaiii to Ganibrell, but he was unable to make it through the Blue Devils' forward wall. In the opening minutes of the second period, Duke quarterback Walt Rappold connected with a pass to halfback Billy Futrell on a play that covered 38 yards. Sev eral plays later Futrell streaiked across the Carolina goal line for the TD. This marked the begin ning of a long 30 minutes for the Gamecocks. IIowever, old "Deacon" Dan put his team back into the game again with tosses to ends John Caskey and Ken Lester. A flare pass to Sammy Anderson on the enemy's 25-yard line was dropped and a Duke player fell on the ball.
