theBIRD by yD SCHUMPERT Who says backs get all the glory? Most of the time tl holds true for the backs, but that doesn't seem to be t case with the Carolina football team. A charter granted by the athletic staff at Carolina ga birth to a new honor to be rewarded to deserving Gamecc athletes. John Caskey, senior end and tri-captain, heads t list as the first "Cock of the Walk." He was named tl for his defensive play in the opening game with Nori western. Strangely enough, the honor again went to an e on the Gamecock forward wall, Ken Lester, in respect to I devoted efforts against Duke last Saturday. Using a rating scale for both offensive and defensi performance, the coaching staff can keep an accurate i count on the progress of each player. In spite of a 37 loss to the Northwestern "Wildcats," Caskey scored 95 on overall effort defensively. He was graded 82% on stro plays run to his side, 96% on pursuit and 93% on pass 4 fense. He made two individual tackles and three assists, Ken Lester, who had carried a "flu bug" around all wE before the Duke game, started off from his end position a turned in one of the finest game performances of his coll career. With not a single "skinny" note, he made a mf of 100% on pass defense. He caught four passes for yards, caught a pass from QB Dan Reeves for the Gari cocks' two-point conversion, and was graded 74% on ovei defense. A TOAST TO MR. HOWARD By some stroke of "luck" the Carolina and Clem. football teams spent last Friday night together in DurhE North Carolina. Nolan Hardin, manager of the Holiday ] and a Clemson alumnus, provided camping facilities for 1 Tiger Team, while the Gamecocks enjoyed their stay in 1 Eden Rock Motel. The farcical "barron of Clemson," Frank Howard, m was probably trying to squeeze a little Iptay money fr the inn-keeper, released several statements concerning i Carolina team to one of the Durham newspapers. "T' town ain't big enough for both of us." "I don't like to caught in the same town with them," croaked Howard. also stated that the only time he ever comes to Colum is when his team plays here. Well, Mr. Howard, I would like to give you a represen tive opinion, which I believe will be a diversified one, your illiterate statements. On behalf of the entire coachi staff and 98% (allowing you 2%) of the population South Carolina, I would like to say that the feelings w< mutual. There's just one thing that's different - we got more important matters to discuss than just a lot "mountain bosh" like you place in the newspapers all I time. As far as your coming to Columbia is concerned, ro't mind your bringing the Tigers down here; we ji hate to see you leave brokenhearted and frustrated. A why would you want to come to Columbia any other tim After all, just look at all the excitement that goes on the metropolis of Clemson! Much time i has been spent in the elimination of mistakes, which, according to - Coach Pitts, were the major factors in the "Biddies'" loss to Gordon Military College. A definite lack of punch on the p a r t of the "Gamecock" , freshmen was evident as they neared the Gordon goal line, and ion although they had several op portunities for a possible score, ea they faltered when they should have been hardest to stop. This the is one of the things that Coach ere Pitts mentioned as being a atreason for defeat. at Although proper backing is the due the "big" Gamecocks, we L-must not overlook our freshman ~iteam.
