Kickoff Magazine Gives USC Chance Most publication sources have low-rated Coach Marvin Bass' 1962 version of the fighting Gamecocks, so USC fans may be pleased to note that someone, at least, gives the Birds a chance. According to KICK-OFF, 1962 FOOTBALL YEARBOOK, South Carolina has "Veterans at every position except quarterback and halfback, and likely sophomores enhance prospects Halfback Billy Gambrell, 5-10, 175, is as good as any in America on a hot lay, and sophs Larry Gill and Marty Rosen could be very good. If senior tackle Jim Moss returns to school, the line will be tougher than a manhole cover. Coach Marvin Bass may have the Gamecocks in contention at last." Under head coach Ara Par seghian, who has an impressive eleven-year record 63-35-2, has acquired a knack for getting his team off on the winning foot, as evidenced by his recent suc cessful starts. Several years ago, the 'Cats astounded the gridiron world by walloping mighty Oklahoma in their open ing encounter. Last year showed no great change, as the Big Ten eleven massacred Boston College, 45-0, in their initial contest, and followed it up with a 28-7 victory feast against Illinois. Deceiving Mark Despite their posting a 4-5 rec ord last season, the Wildcats lost only two games by more than ten points and were never really out classed. From that rugged and under rated outfit, the Chicago school has 27 lettermen returning, sur passing even the Gamecocks in this respect, and boasts of nine of the 1962 starters ready for action again. Thir array of experience has prompted Coach Parseghian to re mark that "we have more depth than we have been able to muster in several seasons, and this should be one of our strong points next year."f Building Blocks Besides having the raw material numerically, Northwestern team also has what it takes in the way of both size and speed, with sev eral linemen shading the 240-pound mark and unusual fleetness afoot at all three backfield running spots. The line play for the Wild cats, particularly in the of fensive departments, is expected to be outstanding, and should propell their vaunted attack to even greater yardage. On the deficit side of the ledger, the Wildcats are in need of a more efficient hand at quarter back, and Parseghian may have to depend on a sophomore field general to get some passing punch into his attack. Good Hit, No Field? Defense, also, has proved to be the weak link in the Northwestern football machine, and wvith the recent loss of their first-string center, may prove slightly soft to the plunges of the USC full back brigade. The Birds' opening opponent, therefore, ranks as amazingly similar to Carolina, with a wealth of lettermen available to work with, but a hole at quar terback to fill and a defense that needs some shoring up.
