(Plague has swept the land and Fearless Freddie Schum pert has been struck down in its wake, so while he is the guest of the Infirmary Hilton, the Sports Editor Emeritus, Blanding Clarkson, Jr., will attempt to fill that worthy's large boots temporarily.) Many are the words that have flowed from the local sports grist mills about the manipulations of Mentor Marvin out at the Roundhouse. Both pro and con opinions have been stated as to possibilities of his perpetuating a power house starting this fall. From a more nationally recognized source come these comments, excerpts from football publications on the results expected of the Birds on the national front. STREET AND SMITH'S FOOTBALL YEARBOOK re ports, "The Gamecocks will throw sharper spurs at the op position . . . Improved line-backing play is expected to make the Gamecocks tougher to score on." THE OFFICIAL COLLEGIATE FOOTBALL RECORD BOOK adds, "Coach Marvin Bass will have a senior line at South Carolina, but will have to rely largely on a sophomore backfield." FOOTBALL FORECAST hopefully states, "Large group of 26 lettermen; well stocked at halfback, fullback, end, tackle, and guard; defense should be better." On the nega tive side the opinion is that the Birds "Still need good quarterback; could use another runner with Gambrell; erratic defense; smallish backs." SPORTS REVIEW, FOOTBALL is pessimistic, report ing, "There'll be the weakness of inexperience and lack of depth at most positions. Ends and tackles will be the strongest spots." INSIDE FOOTBALL was a little more cautiously hope ful, venturing, "With a dazzling halfback (Billy Gambrell), 26 lettermen and a pair of promising quarterbacks (Deacon Dan Reeves and Black Jack McCathern), South Carolina could surprise in the ACC. It will depend largely on the development of the quarterbacks." THE 1962 FOOTBALL ROUNDUP takes another track when it predicts, "A group of rising sophomores from last year's freshman team, especially in the quarterback and halfback departments, will join with 26 returning lettermen to give the Gamecocks experience at nearly every position . . . the big hope for the Gamecock running game lies in the fine crop of big, fast sophomores." TRUE'S FOOTBALL YEARBOOK frankly states, "The Gamecocks, very, very good and very, very bad at times last season, will be very, very much better week after week, if for no other reason than a more reliable defense. Twenty six lettermen and some daring sophomore backfield induc tees indicate improvement on a record that was 4-6 in '61 and could have been better, or could have been worse." DELL SPORTS plots the Birds' fate as follows, "South Carolina, with veterans available at every position except quarterback, doesn't figure as a title contender but has reasonable hopes of improving on its 4-6-0 1961 record." All this just reinforces a long suspected belief. They don't know any more than we do! As for me, I'm kinda in clined to go along with the marvelous Mr. Marvin against anyone! The rough and danger ous trip, disease, hunger, poverty and those ragged redskins who welcomed them with such bar barous hostility, were some of the obstacles they faced and over came. Fortunately, o u r forefathers possessed an inordinate fighting spirit - a spirit that made them defy seemingly hopeless odds. This same spirit is characteristic ally inherent in all Americans, but especially exhibited in the stu dents at U.S.C. The spirit of our 'Fighting Gamecocks" and the loyal backing of our students is known far and wide as being in cessant.
