When in the eighth grade sh< and her family moved to Colum bia, where Judy attended and graduated from Columbia Higl School. "We had every kind of animal that you can men tion, and we used to play with the mice in the feed bags." Well! 3 Judy once attended a Chi 0 con vention in Atlanta. "The name of r it was 'Firesides,' and it was a - leadership school. When we left i Columbia, the girls that I went with decided that when we got to a Atlanta we'd go around and see r the sights and go shopping and r all. But when we got there things didn't work out that way. We left the hotel one time, and that was a to come home. I've never had a a busier weekend in my entire life. I went to more meetings and r functions than I can count." "The only other place that I've i ever been is to New England and r that was when I was about 13. I i met some northern boys not too I long ago who really teased me - about not having a very accurate picture of the north. After all, r what do you expect from a thir ' teen-year-old child. I do remember i that it was beautiful country, and r I think that's what I remember most about it." When asked what kind of music she preferred, Judy replied, "I think I'm tone deaf. I can't sing or play the piano or any instrument, but I do try to sing. The only thing is that the chapter didn't appreciate it when I tried to sing in song fest. As for music, I like almost all types of it." Judy's favorite author is Wil liam Faulkner. "I love him, but I hate to think that he's the spokesman for the south. My favorite book right now is "To Kill A Mocking Bird." One of Judy's dislikes is being a day student. "I would love to live on campus, and instead of go ing home at night go back to the dorm and talk . . . or study. But as long as I'm at Carolina I guess it really doesn't matter. I love this University and have had so much fun since I've been here that I hate to leave." We hate to see her leave, but know that she will get the degree that she's after and enjoy her work. Judy's stay at the Univer sity has been quite profitable, and to add to her list of achievements, Judy was elected this year to Who's Who In American Colleges and Universities. Kappa Sigma Announces New Officers The newly elected officers of Kappa Sigma Fraternity for the fall semester were announced Saturday night at the annual Spring semi-formal honoring the chapter alumni. Those elected are: Lewis Argoc, Grand Master; Bob Smith, Grand Procurator; Leslie Dickert, Grand Master of Cere monies; Bob Crain, Grand Scribe; Swami Nash, Grand Treasurer. Also announced was the new chapter sweetheart, Mary Jo Sherrill of Rock Hill. Baskin By Barbara Moore and Eva EdeLsburg "All I've done all my life is deal with young people," said track coach Weems Baskin. "That's all I know." Coach Baskin, who affectionately calls those he coaches "my kids," has been with the University 14 years. He was asked to come to USC by the late Rex Enright. Besides being track coach, Baskin is intramural director and as sistant football coach. Coach Baskin went to Auburn in 1923 and was regular end on the football team, also gaining special recognition in track. He set new Southern Conference hurdles records several times, won the conference high hurdles three straight years, and took the NCAA title in 1927. He was named as an alternate for the Olympics the same year. Although a knee injury prevented him from qualify ing, he accompanied the team to Amsterdam, where he had perhaps the most unforgettable experience of his lifetime. He was supposed to go to the stadium, but .Just after he left his hotel, he realized he had forgotten his ticket. He didn't have time to go back, so he went to the stadium. There he encountered a 10-ft. wall watched by guards with bayonets. The problem was: How to get in. So our national AAU high hurdles champ scaled the 10-ft. wall. To avoid the guards pursuing him, he mixed with the crowd he had dropped in - the Royal Family and their guests! Being the gentleman that he was, he accompanied them to the Royal Box where he sat unnoticed - he thought. The next morning, the headlines on a Paris and a New York paper contained a bird's eye view of the incident, which had been seen by a close friend of his! Coach Baskin began his coaching career at Auburn in 1930, and went to Georgia the following year, where he coached the great Spec Towns. Before coming to U.S.C. he coached at Mississippi. Coach Baskin who considers himself a strict discipli narian says, "I may seem to be rather harsh at times, but I am usually thanked later." he continued, "You can demand a lot of a boy if you're fair with him. He's on your side; he always will be." The coach's aims for the University are naturally to win, to show improvement every year, help any athlete, and to get better participation in intramural activities.
