For example, the university has awarded three honorary bachelor of arts and 15 honorary master of arts degrees, both of which are conferred now only when they are earned. In addition to the familiar doctor of laws and doctor of literature honorary degrees, the university has in the past conferred honorary doctorates in civil laws, divinity, education, engineering, h u m a n e laws, humane letters, letters, peda gogy and science. Annual Statistic Report These and other insights into the past of the venerable institution are included in the "Annual Statistical Report to the President" by Dr. Rollin E. Godfrey, director of ad missions and registration. Dr. Godfrey's statistics, pub lished for the 11960-61 academic year which ended last June 2, also includes a summary of earned degrees and certificates from 1801 commencement last June. In the earned degree category, as well as in the honorary, some diplona designations have long s:nwe vanished from the university aeademic program. Godfrey's statistics also show: --The advent of the current en rolnent boom, with the student body increasing from 3,4l18 in Sep_ temnber, 1 951 , :3 ,~901 last Septem ber. --Risc and fall of enrolment under Veterans Administration pro grams, with Korean War veterans at a peak of 1,198 in 1957 and down to 283 last spring. --Rise in the post-Korea number ,f students~ who are children of dkeea 'ed veterans, up to a total of 15 in the spring semester, 1961. -Re-emergence of the College of Arts and Science as the largest academie unit at the University, succeeding the School of Business Administration. The School of Education is the third largest unit, enro! ment -wise. ---Representation among the stu dents of 44. states other than South Carolina. the D)istrict of Columbia and 2'4 foreign count ries. Debaters Attend National Tonrney University (debaters J1immny Mamm and Edw.ardi Roberts competed in the National Debate Tournament April 25-28 at the U. S. Military AcXademy (West Point). Dr. M. G. Christophersen of the USC English department, coach of the team, accompanied the deC haters to New~ York. Mann and Roberts wvon first place in Southern Region competi tions last month, defeating seven other seeded Southern teams. The top four teams in each of eight regions throughout the nation are eligible to compete in the national tournament. This is the thirteenth time that USC teams have participated In the national tournament.
