About 175 student legislators are expected to meet for the fall session. The legislators are repre sentatives of 22 S. C. schools with an overall enrollment of 150,000. Delegates will include senators, representatives, o f f i c e r s, ap pointees, and guests. New addi tions to the governmental body are Supreme Court and United States senators and representatives. Student Legislature is based on the General Assembly of South Carolina, modified in order that proceedings may be carried out within time limits. The legislative body, which has been termed "a training ground for future politicians," dliscusses bills of state importance, and( votes on them. Student Legisla ture bills are sometimes actually enacted later by the General As sembly. This is encouraged by the Student Legislature Journal which is printed after each ses sion and dlistributedl to state legis lators. "Our organization is based on the idea that college students will soon be leaders," said Glenn S m i t h, legislature lieutenant governor and a Law School stu (lent at Carolina. "We want to interest people in the practical operation of govern ment to understand the p)ressure that politicians feel and to en courage people to run for public off ice," he continued. Student Legislature was created in 1955 to give college students a voice, and is the oldest of three opterating in the United States. Other states with similar organi zations are Pennsylvania and North Carolina. The priogram in this state is sponsored by the Elks Club. Delegates are chosen in open elections in some schools. (Caro lina delegates are picked by the* Student Senate, with recommen dlations coming from the Student Legislature Committee. Proposed legislation for the 1961 session includes heills to abolish state capital punishment, to create a dental college in the state, to allow women to se'rve on juries in South Carolina courts, Tlhe Carolina Extension Cen ter in Conway is sponsoring a dance tomorrow night at the V.
